  1. As you turn onto the runway, verify trim, flaps, fuel selector. Confirm fuel selector and say the selected tank and amount of fuel in the selected tank. Verify fuel pump, switches, frequencies and transponder. Verify prop, mixture and throttle.
  2. This, though I can't get much past 1/3 to idle. Also, a very good idea to lean very aggressively on the ground so you cannot apply takeoff power without remembering to enrichen the mixture.
  3. Tampa Executive (KVDF, formerly Vandenberg) is really your only bet for finding a hangar right away. I think they run around $300/mo. Everything else will carry a waiting list. I think KTPF has some 3 sided hangars (like a covered hangar with open doors). This time of year, you won't have much rain, and the cover keeps the nightly column of dew from settling on your plane.
  4. Running the RAM version of the 414 engine?
  5. Price seems a bit high. The M20F with manual gear, in my opinion, is the most enjoyable Mooney to hand fly. I put 1100 hours on mine before buying the Rocket. I like the autopilot on the Rocket, but never used the wing leveler and would not have used an autopilot on the F if it had a 2-axis; I'd just fly it with my feet most of the time and rest my hands on the center of the yoke.
  6. FWIW, I purchased one of the Sensorcon units and was alerted to elevated CO during the climb in the Rocket (at most around 35ppm). Opening vents (including the heater) cleared it. The door seal leaked a bit and I suspect mine was coming in around the seal.
  7. I use a DeLorme Inreach device. I think I pay $25/mo for 40 messages and unlimited tracking. I throw it on the dash and use the smartphone app. I figured if I ended up on a raft in the Atlantic that I could grab it on my way out and use the SOS feature if need-be.
  8. I ended up AOG twice with my F due to alternator wires failing. After one of the repairs, I experienced an engine failure that landed me in a field -- whether or not related, Occam's razor makes it seem likely. Get it fixed correctly. If your wires are old and one failed, have all of the ones that are connected to your alternator replaced. If the field wire failed, then the others are not far behind. If it's the alternator or brushes, go ahead and get a Plane Power installed. For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the message was lost. For want of a message the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
  9. I've heard people say downright hateful things about the guy. I don't care how he is as a person, he shot down Germans and put his life on the line repeatedly for our way of life. I deal with high performing individuals frequently and I think being a mean SOB is a common trait among people who are good in their field.
  10. I'd bet if Yeager were senile and crazy that he could still fly any GA aircraft without issue, aside from maybe getting lost.
  11. I've never been charged entering through PBI, FXE or FPR (Edit: Not FRG)
  12. Whoa. that's fucked. Is it because you're not a US citizen/aircraft, or is it just that's what KFRG charges?
  13. https://angleofattackexperience.com/information I think they require a minimum of a PPL.
  14. Let's not forget that airplane prices have been going up with the economy and basic med. I'm doing something that I never thought I'd do with the Rocket and it's that I'm financing it. The bank offered me 4.15% and a payment that's less than most car payments. While I'm not one of them, there are a lot of people who live paycheck to paycheck and they will spend what they can afford. When lending becomes more available, they will spend what their budget allows and the median of the bell curve moves WAY up in price. We're seeing it with the housing market again and a secondary market is the price of airplanes. I wasn't flying back then, but I heard that before the .com bubble burst in 2000 that there were absolutely zero M20J's available on the market at times.
  15. When the engine stops making power, the airplane no longer belongs to you; It belongs to the insurance company. When you're playing blackjack and are showing a 16 against a 7, it's a bad hand. The correct bet is to hit, even though the odds are you'll lose, the odds are slightly less bad than not hitting. I've been to the crash site of the member here who went down into the trees at East Hampton. The trees were burned and the airplane was consumed in post-impact fire, but they got out before it ignited and survived.
  16. What's the mechanism? O2 increases oxidation enough to generate adequate heat for ignition?
  17. I like that I have a factory ashtray and built-in factory oxygen.
  18. One more thing, and it's something that I hate. I have what I consider to be a somewhat well-tempered sense of justice. I get really pissed off at the injustices that we deal with in life, but as pissed as I am with FBO pricing, or having to hold for a long time on the phone with a call center, only to speak to someone who barely speaks English, et cetera, I don't shoot the messenger. The person working the front desk just works there and has about as little to do with the fucking that we're getting as the person answering the phone when you call customer service. Sometimes it's not even the FBO, it's the airport sponsor forcing the FBO through some corrupt channel to pay too much for fuel and those costs get passed on to us. And worse, they often are the buffer for the negatively that goes along with what their employers are doing in setting prices. I go out of my way to express in the kindest of manner how much I appreciate the individual's help and in the same tone of voice, I voice my complaint over the high fees and explicitly tell them that I know they have nothing to do with it personally. Oftentimes it results in a fuel discount or fees getting waived even though I never ask for that. Signature is the only operation on the field at KGSO. They have excellent service and relatively inexpensive self-serve fuel. A couple weeks ago I went to a crowded bar in Tampa with my girlfriend. We're navigating through the crowd and this guy is looking at her and sortof blocking our path. I guide her to the right of him as I'm following her from behind. The next thing you know, as we're passing him, his hand slides up and grabs my ass. I don't think he even realized that it wasn't her. I felt violated; the same way that I feel when I fly out of Asheville.
  19. Nice! What did it take to protect your plane after landing? Did you seal everything with painters tape and bag the gear? This is something that I'd love to do one year, but the concern over the dust getting into everything has me cautious.
  20. I've had an aileron stick due to antichafe tape coming off from a gap seal, but the adhesive remained. As a quick fix, I put motor oil on a rag and wiped it down until I could get it repaired.
  21. It depends on how much the search and learning about the fleet interests you. If life's got you busy and you can't afford to spend a lot of time searching for planes, evaluating them, aren't sure what to look for, and this guy will negotiate the fair market price for you, it's probably worth it. The market is a lot tighter now than it has been in years and good planes that are priced right move quickly, which was one thing that burned me numerous times during my search -- uncertainty on planes that were good and priced correctly; someone who knew what they were looking at would move in quickly and buy while I was making up my mind.
  22. I may be there as well. Are you a vendor?
  23. If it ends up being a wire or the alternator, do yourself a favor. Have all wires replaced, not repaired and install a plane power alternator. You will continue to have these issues if wires or alternator are old. Not addressing this the FIRST time it happened resulted in a second time, which resulted in a post-maintenance engine failure that ended up with me on the ground and not on a runway.
  24. My current financial outlay between my two airplanes is roughly $2000/mo before I fly. Hangars are over $500/mo here. I live in a shitty block construction apartment and have an 11 year old car with no payment, so I guess it works out.
  25. Would really suck if you didn't have anything to cut a zip tie with.
