  1. These numbers are from a few years ago. A complete caliper was over $600 but new housing was only $190. It’s easy to swap the parts over to the new housing.
  2. This isn’t the same negative loading that is saw in flight. The plane is setting on the landing gear. To replicate flight loads the center part of the cabin would be set on blocks and wheels retracted.

  4. I built these about 5 years ago and have been happy with them. The legs are about 15" long each with leveling bolts and the original top inch or so of the ram was cut off just below the factory cross hole and a countersink hole was drilled in the top as deep as possible to match the LASAR tie down points. The locking collars were machined out to match the ram diameter and were tested on a press to have a slip force greater than 5000lbs. I had always stored them under the wing, by just sliding them outboard a couple of feet and next time I needed them they were always within arms reach. I no longer do that, a while back I had a tire go down and the wing was resting on the top of the jack when I stopped by to check on things. Luckily nothing was hurt.
  5. A 2 way splitter has a path loss of 3db to each port. Essentially your power is cut in half. Your are also directing the output of one radio back into the receiver of the other one at a level much higher than it is designed to handle. If you don’t want to install a RF switch Run the coax along the bottom of the panel and put a male and female connector in the middle. If you have to use the handheld just disconnect the 2 connectors and connect the one that goes to the antenna to your handheld.

  7. Check with Aircraft Specialties Service in Tulsa. They sell lycomming, superior and eci parts. They are one of the largest distributors around and have good prices.
  8. i. Hydraulic System Pressure Test. When a flexible hose has been repaired or overhauled using existing hardware and new hose material, before the hose is installed on the aircraft it is recommended that the hose is tested to at least 1.5 system pressure. A new hose can be operationally checked after it is installed in the aircraft using system pressure. There are some detailed guides online that cover the potential problems. Be sure to mark where the nut comes to on the hose before screwing the center nipples in. There have been cases of the hose backing out of the nut as the nipple is screwed in and they is no way to tell unless the hose is marked.
  9. What does a set of Garmin Certified Sensors cost? A set of Garmin experimental sensors for a 4 cylinder lycoming is over $1k at Spruce. Some of them are overpriced industrial items, but JPI has put a lot of work into reducing the mass of their EGT sensors to make them respond quicker as well as use an alloy that will last in the environment they are operated in.

  13. A couple of things I learned several years ago when doing this. The steering shaft may hit the imstrument directly above it. Depth is a problem for the instrument on the bottom far left due to steel tubing if using any kind of ring light extra clearance between instruments is required. I don't think the egt is even required You can get a new color jpi 730 with 4 egt and 4 cht probes right now for around $1200. The other sensors can be easily added as money and time allows. Consider going ahead and removing the existing one to allow a little more cleanup of the panel. I also prefer the key on the bottom just so it doesn't hang down on the instrument below. Another option is to put the existing switch on a separate small subpanel just above and to the side of your knee.
  14. All 4 of my injectors are like that one. It's just an older design. A PMA injector cost much less than the lycoming ones.
  15. This simple mod must be good for at least 30 KNOTS, maybe more.
  16. I installed a 340 that I found a good deal on a few years ago. I later sold it and replaced it with a 8000bt that was priced to sell immediately on beech talk. The 8000bt was the more expensive unit but it seems to be a better unit. Unless you are installing it yourself the labor is going to make any price difference in what you pay for a used unit seem pretty small. If you cleaning up you panel getting rid of the external intercom will free up a little more panel space.

  19. To retire at 54 Go to college and get a degree that will put you in a good paying high demand field Max out your 401k each year while taking the employer match and tax saving. Delay the new car and kids for a few years Either you or spouse take a government job that will have a 50% pension after 25 years(+3% for each year over 25) and allow you both to keep the insurance for life. Retire early in the year you will turn 55 and you can begin taking withdrawals from your 401k penalty free. Hope no bad luck comes along! Yes there is such a thing.
  20. I remember a few threads on here over the last few years concerning the FF high compression STC. There was a couple of people that paid to have it installed and then paid more later to have it removed. Anyone who is considering using FF for anything should google their name.
  21. I added them to my F model about 5 years ago. The kit is expensive if purchased new. I was able to find used parts for under $500. I have the drawings and install instructions that I can email to you.
  22. Make sure the shield is only grounded at one end of the cable. Don't bundle the magnetometer wire with or near any other wires or coax. Wrapping the power lead to the light around split ferrit core might help. If it's still causing problems one of these or similar will likely fix the problem.   23. Mechanics almost never pay the full price a owner would. Even Aircraft Spruce will give an FBO discount.
  24. It will cause a change in cabin pressure. I opened mine one day in level flight to take a better picture and it resulted in the Brittain Altitude Hold applying a full down elevator about 3 seconds later.
