Real world TKS to TKS what is the TAS delta between the bravo and rocket? 5, 10, 15 kts? Fuel burn looks to be similar.
-
There was a really nice one on AAA a few months ago. Had to keep telling myself do not call, do not call, DO NOT CALL. Luckily it sold after a couple weeks.

I think this is going to be my next AP if something happens to my stec. TruTrak is working with Aspen and I’m guessing the heading/ILS shortcomings will be fixed with the combo. All for the price of one or two repairs on a BK system.

@NJMac I think the horizontal mounting is preferable but not in place of the ASI. I’m pretty sure the vertical position still provides all of the info for 4 cylinder engines (the 6 cylinder gives up the egt display). Id vote for the vertical mount in your panel. Keep in mind JPI really wants the buttons at the top, right, or bottom. However, it will work in the left orientation as well. Your panel is going to look great and well worth the wait.

I hope mine falls a third this year as well. Not sure I’ll get my instrument check ride in before the deadline, might be just after. I’m really curious about this. The chances are slim but I’d assume the 100k cap would be for all individuals in the plane and on the ground? Structures under that limit as well? I should really read my policy again.

Converting your Mooney to a twin?
-
Not possible for many unless burning Jet A. I understand about not carrying non family passengers but what about people on the ground injured during a crash? Curious if many claims have been filed by those on the ground.

Agree with the above. However, last year as a first time owner with half of his hours and 50% higher hull value my premium was 20% lower using falcon (same as his quote above). So rates might be going up.

I’m surprised you think that. On my MC I feel ND is the dividing line between some of the best riding in the country and a whole lot of flat nothingness. Same goes for flying and the scenery/safety minded challenges it provides. I hope to get my C out to the mountains ASAP. Have a great time, however you get out there.

I’m well aware of the history. I also think you picked a perfect fixed up and well maintained twin. I’m just saying that pre (current) twin you would always use 170kts and 10 gph. The CSObeech site posted an ideal conditions 180kts at 21 gph. That is a 5 percent increase in speed for double the fuel burn. Fixed costs can very by location and experience. A pilot with your amount of experience should be able to insure a $230k Mooney with 1 mil smooth for the price you listed. What was the “all in” overhaul cost for the last pair of twin engines you overhauled? Single engine? I’m very good at sugar coating the numbers for posting online and to my wife. However, for the average owner I think a 35% increase in total operating expense to go from a 231 to baron would be hard to duplicate. Again completely agree that twin ownership can be reasonable. Agree that the twin can be a much better deal to buy a nice one. Agree that you have a lot of experience and I very much value your input.

@ShuRugal Looks really nice. Can you print off another one or can I buy your broken one? I’m not really sure what I’m looking at in the last picture. Does the trim piece mount on the top of that?

What's your oil pressure set at?
MIm20c replied to AlexLev's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Shop gauge or engine monitor? I normally see around 67-69 psi IIRC. -
The real value in the upgrade is being able to keep the unlocks. I think the upgrade program will end at some point (can’t remember the date) so those that are thinking about it might want to keep that in mind.
-
I’m holding to my opinion that it will be twice the cost. I respect your number and experience but find your numbers tend to lean in the direction of current ownership (I realize you still own the Mooney).
-
I would think the Twinkie would be 2x the cost of an E. Just as the Barron is at least 2x the cost of bonanza (hourly/annual costs not acquisition) However, I do feel think 25k for 200 hrs is a realistic number depending on your fixed costs.

I flew around northern lower Michigan last weekend. Could see the tracks where the ice breaker had been around the bridge. Continued up to Drummond Island for lunch. The airport manager was nice enough to drive the runway before I landed without being asked to. Parked right next to the snowmobiles and ran to town for a bite to eat. I have the same ice problem at my hangar. I’ll need to get a tow with chains on the wheels for next winter.

With one or two 750’s installed in the panel I find little value in a dedicated map or traffic page. The ability to scale one in if needed or leave the pfd full screen is valuable IMO. The higher resolution and faster processing power is important as well. Think about how long the current monthly updates take Now if you didn’t have a 750 and 650 installed (like a single 650, 430, 440) I’d want a dedicated mfd installed.

As you wait for 305 guys to respond you might want to google “mooneyspace rocket” to get some background info. Also the bravo is an alternative to the acclaim at half the price. Good luck on your search.

I find the shoulder room a little tight. Helps if you stagger the seats in flight.
-
I’ll be renewing mine the end of this month. Hopefully I will have a sizable decrease going from 0 hrs complex to ~140.

If you decide to head up let me know. I’m going to need a fuel stop in Thompson, Manitoba because of my tiny tanks but my 500 is packed and ready for some migratory bird photography. Only upgrade I really miss is the LR tanks to explore like @201er although my wife would never ok a 10 hr flight without a stand up restroom and a endless wine glass.

Texas? It’s beautiful flying weather in SW Michigan today! Largest snowflakes that I can remember. 88 kts, I was actually considering a 150/172 for my first plane. What was I thinking!

Sounds good to me as long as you pay for the time spent finding all those problems. The example that @jetdriven used sounds great. If a mechanic was paid to change a tire and did not notice a wheel cracking down the middle that is incompetent. If they missed a failing fuel pump during the process of changing the tire I’d call that out of the scope of repair. If the buyer wants to spend a few hundred dollars on a inspection and expects the mechanic to find corrosion under the fuel tank sealant (or similar) he needs to find a new hobby.

The probe sticks in a good 1.5 inches and only reads the temp at the tip of the prob. My thoughts are it’s pretty consistent. All the cylinders get downdraft cooling but #5 has the alternator blocking some flow/pressure along with some alternator cooling holes cut into the baffling in that area that might lower the pressure differential. The holes that I’ve seen are larger and rectangular but the drilled out ones are probably easier to make.

Mooney Friendly Avionics Shop In Southern California

Can you post up a picture of your panel so we know where to spend your money? Do you have a working autopilot? Do you want to fix or upgrade the panel? Budget? 20? 30? 40? 50? i think the newer Mooney aircraft have riveted boxes but the older ones have screws?
