Yes, somewhat. I never meant to imply the flying part will not be needed to get a FR (flight review) signed off. All I was saying that one might have had a flight with a FI (flight instructor) that included all the air work that is required for getting credit, and it could be retroactively used, in a pinch. If I recall correctly, the flight part of a FR doesn't need to be one flight, doesn't even need to be with one FI - although I might be mixing up US and EASA regulations (I have the "privilege" to have to maintain two sets of papers, including different currency requirements). For example, to be eligible to fly club planes, my club requires an annual flight with a club FI. That usually includes all the air work that a FR would require - mine took 2h and had me sweating (in a good way). While not an official equivalent of a FR, I would have no problem asking my FI if he'd "sign" the papers if I needed it. Just throwing an idea out there. Not saying I am anywhere close to right.

The only one I heard good things about from a trusted source is this: Brunner CLS-E force feedback yoke A bundle of yoke and rudder pedals is here for a measly $3800. The person making the recommendation didn't know if the "NG" version was any good, so you might want to have a look around for reviews. I have no direct experience, couldn't get myself to spend ca $2k for a sim yoke, but given the times I just might.

FAA Wings give one a way to get lots of different activities credited, up to a full flight review. You still need to have someone sign off that you did the proper air work, but that route might be easier (perhaps you have something from a few months back).

Looks like I did kick a hornet's nest, inadvertently. Guess it goes to show that "some" knowledge is worse than "no" knowledge (in this example, taking a random shielded cable and expecting it to work, instead of one that actually matches the spec from the manufacturer). Double shielded is definitely a "type" of network cable, even if far from typical; from the Wikipedia article: Individual and overall shield (F/FTP, S/FTP, and SF/FTP) Individual shielding using foil between the twisted pair sets, and also an outer foil or braided shielding. Common names: fully shielded twisted pair, screened foiled twisted pair, shielded foiled twisted pair, screened shielded twisted pair, shielded screened twisted pair. This type of shielding helps prevent EMI from entering or exiting the cable and also protects neighboring pairs from crosstalk. -

That is basically a [computer] network cable, right? Those do come shielded, even with a special plastic insert to keep the individual twisted pairs aligned along the cable run; they also require appropriate connectors, not the basic dime-a-dozen Radio Shack ones, but dedicated to a given specific cable type. More info here and at the trusty o'le Wikipedia - see the "cable shielding" section. Not saying to not buy the Aspen cable, just pointing out that in a pinch there probably is a way to get it right without the Aspen cable. -
FWIW, for corrosion prevention Dinitrol AV8 is said to be really good - it dries out instead of dripping out. It's what I'm planning to use.

If I may, I'm with @steingar on this - it is not the approach guy's place to second-guess a PIC, especially if an emergency was declared. Once on the ground, by all means, work it out, give each other a number to call, tear each other's license up (kind of hard to do with those plastic FAA things, but there was enough adrenaline on both sides to make this work) but not before. And "direct Maui VORTAC" is not vectors (0:43). I actually thing the pilot did well - not only he didn't bend anything, but also didn't let the controller pressure him into something he didn't find acceptable. I'm all out of reactions, hence the post, otherwise I'd just give a few likes and call it a night... -

Is it possible that the boost pump "overpowers" the float (the thing that closes the carb fuel "input") and when it gets turned off, the intake is indeed closed for a moment, till the engine sucks out the "excess" fuel from the carb bowl and then things return to normal? Or do airplane carbs work that much differently from what I am used to in old cars and motorcycles?

TBH, I haven't looked around for a justification, but if I run across one I can update. I believe the ban is for VFR "bimbles" and travel that is legitimately needed can be made without much issues (see below). For me, for now, things are mostly "business as usual" but everyone is working from home. Schools closed, special reduction in work time for parents of kids under 8, any gathering of more than 50 people banned (no exceptions, and they do mean it), cinema/theater/opera/pubs/restaurants/water parks/etc closed. Great weather, sunny, lots of people in actual parks, but everyone is keeping their distance. Stores still open, but non-essential (grocery) parts of large malls expected to be shut down. But yes, non-essential travel is discouraged, borders (which are geographically more equivalent to borders between individual states like MI and OH, not countries) are closely monitored (they are usually open, like between MI and OH, at least within what is called the Schengen Area) and people are being quarantined if they wish to enter (which makes any attempt at crossing the border pointless anyway). Each country is acting somewhat differently, but it is more "lockdown" than "free for all". People in the service industry (hotels, restaurants, pubs, leisure travel, etc) are getting hit the most - home without pay, or with severely reduced pay, etc, even airline folk are saying they are putting in significantly less hours. No reductions in workforce yet, but if their workload is reduced by 50%, they feel the writing is on the wall.

FWIW, an increasing number of us on this side of the Atlantic cannot fly our Mooneys for the time being, outside of the pattern / ATZ anyway... Due to these extenuating circumstances I did fly a club C152 the other day, that was before we were told we can't.

The 100LL replacement doesn't exist, so nobody knows what the price will be, I understand. The 94UL is $4.80/gal at KRMY, 100LL is $4.55/gal. I guess the question is when 100LL will get banned / phased out due to the lead content... What they are selling is likely the same thing that Petersen are selling, just for their fuels, not for automotive gasoline. What is even more confusing is that in their FAQ they say that "Our 100-octane unleaded avgas will be fully commingable with 100LL. This means that it can be stored in the same airport tank as 100LL and commingled into the aircraft fuel tanks with 100LL at any ratio." but at the same time "All FAA-certificated piston aircraft will be required to install an FAA-Approved STC on their aircraft to utilize Swift Fuels 100 Octane Unleaded Avgas." - I wonder what happens if my airport puts the Swift fuel in the 100LL tank and sells it to me as 100LL without me having a STC

So, US-based Swift have been working on unleaded aviation gasoline for a long time. They do have a 94 octane fuel on the market and claim to be close to having their 100LL replacement approved. They now have a "sale" where for $100 one can get, if and when the FAA approves, a STC to use their unleaded 100LL replacement fuel. Over here, in Europe, we also have lower octane unleaded aviation gasoline, made by a European company, but they haven't been very successful due to price. We do have a lot of smaller planes using automotive gasoline in their Rotax engines, which is easily explained by the fact that car gas is half the price of avgas. But I haven't heard any news about a possible 100LL replacement. They call it the FOREVER STC and it was mentioned on AVweb. The FAA do mention the subject here and there but don't provide any timeline or regular updates. Thoughts, especially considering turbocharged engines and high altitude flying?

Well, I have a signed and stamped WnB sheet that lists the empty weight of my K at 1740 lbs, giving me a 1160 lbs useful load. I may or may not do a reweigh, but that piece of paper is likely staying in the plane's file for ever.

@DonMuncy - you are indeed the master tinkerer. Thank you for sharing. Questions: - is your desiccant silca gel, or something more advanced technologically? what is the volume of the desiccant? - how did you seal the funnel in the oil filler tube? - when able, can you please post pictures / a detailed description of how you attach to the breather hose and how airtight that attachment is? FWIW, I went the "positive pressure all the time" way to not worry about sealing the dry air in the engine, but would like to "upgrade" to a (semi) closed loop, possibly measuring the humidity of the positive pressure air. But definitely going to a tube-type desiccant container to assure full flow through desiccant is top priority.

Something ready made or something more or less home made? FWIW, mine is an aquarium pump, pushing air into a food container with silca gel (aka kitty litter) which goes out through an air filter and into the oil dipstick. Adding a humidity sensor to the "air drying box" today, in the long run I might end up closing the cycle and feeding the air from the engine (oil line) back into the aquarium pump.
