  1. So long as you don't exceed the amp rating of the fuse behind the cigar lighter jack, you can also use a cable to back feed power from a car boost starter pack. This will easily power a single nav/com for hours. I used this once to get back from Dallas to Memphis in my 64E, and then carried it for months while I worked thru a intermittant issue with my alternator. So long as you have manual gear. Example; google this for the Walmart version; but any auto parts store should sell one: Stanley 'FatMax' 700-Amp Peak Jump Starter
  2. You might check rentals at KTKX? [BTW my Mooney is also visiting your in M05]
  3. I've owned 2 vintage manual gear Mooneys. One required much more significant strength to retract than the other. So the answer is, if you have correct speed control on retraction, than I expect it will depend on how the gear is rigged and maintained on that specific aircraft.
  4. Isn't this simply an alternate Amazon feed?
  5. Well the ink on my 3rd class medical isn't yet dry (just returned from my AME). Maybe this will be sorted out by June 2018?
  6. The 1090ES equipment we are now installing will work fine in both terrestrial and satellite ADSB environments
  7. Irrelevant, but just mentioning that I've been using the AOPA agency since before it was AOPA (since 1989). To address a couple of your points: "I had binded over the phone before going offshore for work." - maybe, but it's my experience that binding really needs to be in writing, email or snail mail. "it worries me that if (knock on wood) I really had to use my insurance it would be a little too frustrating....and who wants that if you are in an unfortunate situation" - if you need to actually use your insurance, you will deal directly with the underwriter, not AOPA
  8. Lambert's "throwed rolls" is still there, but significantly south of proposed route
  9. Only one case I know of, in a Cherokee, and it had some help .....NTSB report FTW97LA113
  10. Only for exactly one hour.
  11. Careful with your units. KW/hr has no meaning. It is just the way that the uninformed sometimes write kWh.
  12. Just the opposite experience. I purchased a Mooney in 1989, and then another in 2012, both times with a partner. Agreement was not an issue.
  13. I've been using the Halo (Quiet Tech) for almost a year. Took a few hours to get used to hearing a bit of aircraft/engine noise that my former ANR unit blocked, but really like the Halo. Much more comfortable after an 6-8 hour flying day. Also, no batteries required!
  14. Unless you have undetected wear on your upload block. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/578-manual-gear-uplock-block-wear/#comment-5455
  15. It's unlikely that Jim's M20J has manual gear. LOL! I will continue to use my seat belts for a gust lock, and would be reluctant to tie anything onto my J-bar.
  16. Vintage owners may pause over the statement that "In Mooney's with a Johnson bar, the Johnson Bar is used to hold the controls forward."
  17. When I was based at KPVG a C172 flew in to have his brakes checked. He said that he had just tried to taxi from his tie down and his brakes would not release until he applied nearly full power. When he shut down, the mechanic and I saw that he was dragging his tail tie down rope. A metal eyelet and some concrete was still attached to the other end. If I wasn't there when he landed, I wouldn't have believed it either.
  18. Flightaware will not normally show VFR flights unless there's flight following
  19. Similar....in the early 1990s enroute from KPVG to south FL at 6-7000' just missed a bunch of balloons rising fast, about 100'. Did get me attention.
  20. Sent you a PM on how to contact the owner of a 1981 M20K, based at EDML.

    Gear ripped off

Happened during my off-field landing in July 2012, after fuel injection failure resulted in fuel starvation in N1310W. Google for NTSB narrative.
  22. Handheld com (use batteries, not nicad recharge pack), with PTT and outside com antenna cables.
  23. Correct, but clearly not the OP's issue or the stain/drip would be to the floor. Suggest you fly the tank nearly empty, and order a complete drain valve as well as a new o-ring. Install the new valve and keep the used valve, with new o-ring installed, with your spares in the luggage compartment. Useful to have on the road if a persistent drip suddenly occurs.
  24. I may have a lead on a M20K about to go on the market. It's German registered, well maintained, and based in Bavaria. PM for more information.
