By this time, you must realize that comparing absolute EGT readings between aircraft is virtually meaningless. One of many variables that will greatly effect readings is the placement of the probe; a short difference in distance from the flame front can result in major difference in indicated EGT for a cylinder operating under exactly the same conditions. This difference can even effect comparison of indicated EGT (not actual EGT) between cylinders on the same aircraft, if the probe placements are not selected with care.

Compass Correction Card Holder
neilpilot replied to KyleKJ90's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The above solutions are more elegant, but this just happened in our C and I simply visited the Loews PMN section, cut a 3" piece of clear tubing that was the appropriate length and added a longitudinal cut. Think it came to $0.23 plus tax. -
My Mooney partner just reported excellent reception using the "stock" Stratus with the latest download on a flight from KAWM to KHOT. Don't think we will give up XM on our GNS430, but after we get some time behind ADS-B weather on the iPad we may reconsider. Any idea if there will eventually be a way to add GPS to the Stratux package, or does that already exist?

Depends....My first Mooney was an E model, SN 198. It was also a 64E. But it came off the line in 1963 and the FAA registry describes it as "1963 MOONEY M20E".

I'm sure your realize that the screen will catch those big pieces, and it's entirely possible to load the screen with internal part fragments and see little or no metal in the filter. In other words, checking the filter is not a substitute for checking the screen. Having said that, I'm also guilty of checking the screen only once every 75-100 hours.

Nels, these come in 2 flavors, narrow deck and wide deck. I have a new pulley that I never installed in my 64E, which I believe is wide deck. I would need to get to hangar to take measurements. It was purchased from Interav but I never got around to installing this part (new and still in original sealed bag); it's likely the correct pulley. PM me if you still need this.

Thanks for the info. We just ordered the components, along with a rechargeable power supply, all for under $110 on Amazon. I plan on having this up and running in time for an evaluation enroute to Mooney Summit III

Engine trouble, emergency landing!
neilpilot replied to jnisley's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I fought an intermittent problem for months when I had my '64E. I finally suspected the servo, and it was sent off for overhaul. After that things seemed fine. Then 2 years later I experienced an off-field forced landing that totaled the aircraft. A subsequent extensive NTSB tear-down confirmed no other issues, so the servo was sent out for evaluation. It was found to be defective; it seemed the original issue WAS NOT REPAIRED by the overhaul shop. Cut and paste this link for the full narative of N1310W, especially final paragraph: http://www.ntsb.gov/about/employment/_layouts/ntsb.aviation/brief2.aspx?ev_id=20120721X23053&ntsbno=CEN12FA463&akey=1 -
Probably goes without saying, but when you changed the oil did you also check the oil screen?

Airbound Aviation Caldwell NJ (it's just a Mooney)
neilpilot replied to Jim Peace's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Hi Jim, I was the Mooney who arrived at CDW and looked at your damage. Did you confirm that it was the TPX antenna? You need to know that I just retired last weekend, and If I had known the cost of a wash and wax I would have flown up from Memphis with all the required supplies, including water. I switched from MMU to CDW & Air Bound for my last few arrivals (I fly into NJ 2-4 times a year). Considering the normal poor service attitude I find in the Metro area, Air Bound is actually my preference. Sorry for your damage. -
Nice article about Sam Jewell of Jewell Aviation
neilpilot replied to ryoder's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
My experience at Jewell has been limited to the 20 annuals that they've done on my M20 E & C. When I first went there in 1995, I was drawn by their local reputation and a less-than-satisfactory annual done by a shop here in Memphis the previous year. Their base fee for the M20E annual was around 60% of the Memphis shop, and they didn't nickel-and-dime me the way I had been treated in Memphis. Between 1995 and 2015, I skipped taking my Mooney to Jewell only one year. I brought my E to DMax's in 2001, since I wanted an MSC to take a close look at my E after years in a non-Mooney shop. I also had Don do mods that required specific Mooney expertise. Don reported no deficiencies that I could attribute to the initial 6 years of Jewell annuals. I attribute their lower cost, to a large extent, to the rural Kennett location away from the Metro area and the relatively low overhead. BTW the fuel at KTKX is consistently lower priced, maybe for the same reason? -
Nice article about Sam Jewell of Jewell Aviation

I can give Sam & David a good reference (see my other posts). Just picked up our M20C at their shop this morning. -
I've had Sam and David Jewell do all but one of my Mooney annuals since 1995. Just picked up our M20C at Kennett today. They are streight shooters and very up front. Never had them do an engine O/H, but have had a couple of cylinders rebuilt. They did a rebuild for one of us Mooneyspacers recently, as well as for a friend's C140, and both seemed happy with the results.

KIAG (Niagara Falls) - towered, with National Guard F-101 Voodoos and Hueys practicing in the mix. Guard would be talking to the tower UHF, so you only heard one side of the traffic. Sometimes unnerving when a Voodoo would suddenly appear off your side on a low high-speed pass, or a Huey would auto-rotate alongside the active while you landed. 10L/28R is only 9829'x150', but I somehow managed to stop that C150 anyway. Just watch for the arresting cable that could be raised on the approach of 28L.

It's also a good idea to wear gauntlet rubber gloves.

May not be a factor, but you want to know if MO will hit you up for any use tax or other fees if you move from TN. I live in TN but hangar in AR, and that has allowed me to dodge the TN use tax for the last 2 Mooneys.
-
Local is a relative term. I'm based at KAWM, and have had all but one of my Mooney annuals since 1995 done at KTKX, by Jewell Aviation. Exactly the same distance for you (from KMKL) as it is for me. I consider that local. Ask for David Jewell.
-
Good advice, but I suffered fuel starvation and an off field landing about a year after my 64E system overhauled. Broken piece of O-ring blocked fuel delivery. See NTSB full report for N1310W, July 2012.

When my Skytec failed, I had similar intermittent failed starts. Sent the starter back to Skytec, and it was a bad starter. No Bendix in a Skytec starter.

Have we reached this stage in flying?
neilpilot replied to cliffy's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Grateful my partner warned me before I had a chance to do the iOS 8.3 dance. But there's something I don't understand. If the BadElf is off line due to iOS8.3, doesn't Foreflight continue to provide IAPs and charts, just without GPS following? You are one of may pilots that have called Foreflight "useless" without BadElf connectivity, and several have moaned that this is why they need paper charts. Why useless when it's simply GPS-less? BTW I'm using FlyQ, and carry a $40 Android tablet with a free app that provides current charts and IAPs should my iPad fail, which it never has. And I don't couple the android to a GPS. -
A rescue I've worked with in Hattiesburg, MS is trying to get a extremely scared and non- socialized Maltese to a rescue in Gainesville. FL. They are in the process of setting up a on the ground transport for next weekend. If anyone is interested in flying a leg either out of Hattiesburg, MS or into Gainesville. FL Either go to http://pilotsnpaws.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=33325 or PM me and I can forward the contact info. Not sure but I think the rescue is a 401©.
