  1. May be, but the J they were renting was N301KC. The N # of the Mooney down starts with 5 and ends with M. Could be they changed rentals?
  2. Hi Andrew, I will be there Thursday evening.  If you want to join us for dinner, let me know.  It will probably be my wife Becky and I, and JoAnn Dubin (wife of one of the Summit organizers) and possibly 1-2 others.  Will be going sometime after the registration closes at 5pm.

What is your ALT-to-ECP flight number & time of arrival?

  3. We will all be at the Mooney Summit in Panama City Beach
  4. We expect to be adding a 5th item to the Silent Auction. Since details are still being worked out, this item will probably first be announced at the Registration next Thursday evening. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
  5. Hi Tom,

If you still need the shaft(s), and haven't yet tried either, contact Alan Fox 856 419 5209 or  jerrypressley 423 231 3491

Give my regards to Jerry if you call him (he & I flew down to DR in my E to have it painted)....

  6. Bidding opens on September 28, just 10 days from today. All of the registered participants should have received the following Silent Auction fact sheet, but Mike Elliot has suggested I post it here to whet the appetite of Summit participants, and to give other MooneySpacers an idea of what the auction entails. Silent auction fact sheet.docx
  7. Back in February I bought one from Spruce. Found that some vendors were back ordered. 08-06081 DONALDSON FILTER AM108365FP
  8. That track is from 2013!
  9. Time for a reminder that you, your friend and family can support Mooney Summit, Inc. and it's charitable foundation, The Bill Gilliland foundation. It won't cost you anything; you simply need to remember to go to www.smile.amazon.com (not amazon.com) when you shop Amazon. Even you CBs can do it (you know who you are). Of course your direct support is always welcome. You can donate using PayPal (as gift to iwannadonate@mooneysummit.com ). A preferred method, which may better document your tax deductible donation, would be to send a check to: Mooney Summit, Inc., 1334 Riverside Dr, Tarpon Springs, Fl. 34689
  10. Not only that, but if you loosen the clamp and slide the mount up or down the yoke shaft from where it was when the A&P inspected it, that voids the sign off. A change in position could very well create interference that wasn't there when inspected by the A&P. So you see how ridiculous this can get. I asked Sporty's this question, and they answered: "As the Ram mount is not a permanent mount or change in configuration to the aircraft, no endorsement or STC is required. I assume that you are using the iPad for personal use in your private aircraft, as such you as the PIC determines if there is any interference with other instruments. " Of course that's the answer that helps them sell yoke mounts. I'm satisfied that's the correct answer, and the notation in IFR (see my original post) can be somewhat misleading. Case closed as far as I'm concerned.
  11. I like the FAA advisory (see line I my last post) much better. They conclude that "EFB yoke mounts must be STC'd ". Can you show me a mount that's STC'd?
  12. I know that you can't always trust Google search results, but this leads me to believe that the operator of the aircraft can determine if a yoke mount is OK without an A&P signoff: https://www.faasafety.gov/spans/noticeView.aspx?nid=4155
  13. Thanks Rob, but I had already read AC 20-173. I found it not specific enough to answer my question. Also this AC is clearly advisory; I'm looking for regulatory input to determine if I have an issue I need to address.
  14. Good data point, but I'm surprised that the "electrical" matters. If I understand this issue (and I'm obviously not sure that I do), it's not the iPad that's the issue, it's the mount being attached to the yoke.
  15. Well I can find it on page 1-1-17 of the current (May 2016) AIM. It references handheld satellite GPS systems, so in legal terms it may not apply to an iPad mount. Here it goes; read the last few lines: (3) Antenna Location. The antenna location for GPS receivers used for IFR and VFR operations may differ. VFR antennae are typically placed for convenience more than performance, while IFR installations ensure a clear view is provided with the satellites. Antennae not providing a clear view have a greater opportunity to lose the satellite navigational signal. This is especially true in the case of hand−held GPS receivers. Typically, suction cups are used to place the GPS antennas on the inside of cockpit windows. While this method has great utility, the antenna location is limited to the cockpit or cabin which rarely provides a clear view of all available satellites. Consequently, signal losses may occur due to aircraft structure blocking satellite signals, causing a loss of navigation capability. These losses, coupled with a lack of RAIM capability, could present erroneous position and navigation information with no warning to the pilot. While the use of a hand−held GPS for VFR operations is not limited by regulation, modification of the aircraft, such as installing a panel− or yoke−mounted holder, is governed by 14 CFR Part 43. Consult with your mechanic to ensure compliance with the regulation and safe installation.
  16. My RAM mount is also single-knob removable. That does not help. I'm looking for the following only: Do you have an A&P signoff? Have you had any discussion with an FAA inspector about your yoke mount?
  17. The September 2016 issue of IFR "You Need an EFB" quotes AIM 1-1-17.b1.(c)(3) as indicating that a yoke-mounted holder is a "modification of the aircraft" governed by 14CFR Part 43, and recommends an A&P logbook entry. My partner and I both fly behind an iPad, using a RAM yoke mount. We've done this for years, have confirmed that the mount does not impede yoke movement, and neither of us find any issues in reading the panel or accessing switches or the fuel selector. For those on Mooneyspacethat use use a yoke mount for an iPad, mini iPad, portable GPS or any other device - do you have an A&P signoff? Have you had any discussion with an FAA inspector about your yoke mount? I am not looking to debate the various means of mounting an iPad or the fact that a iPad mini is smaller than the standard iPad. Just looking for information on if a yoke mount presents a verified regulator compliance issue.
  18. Way back in the mid-80s I was doing business with the USAF. We made a couple of visits to Dayton, and it was relatively easy to get a waiver to land our company Commander 500S at KFFO. I guess that times have changed. I miss those "good old days".
  19. As it stands now, Mooney Summit IV participants will have the opportunity to bid on the following silent auction items during the event: L-3 Lynx NGT-9000, compete with install kit, WAAS GPS antenna, and Wi-Fi module. The winner will be required to have this installed, at their expense, by an authorized L-3 dealer of their choice. Lightspeed Zulu PFX headset Set of 12 Tempest fine wire spark plugs Jeppesen G1000 PilotPak, Full USA coverage (1-year subscription retail $1566.00) All of the above items are subject to change, and are in addition to the raffle that has become a Mooney Summit tradition. I will post infrequent updates, including specifics on how the auction will be conducted.
  20. going after the Indian market?
  21. Next time if you want some really cheap fuel along the N-S route, consider KTKX.
  22. So you stopped over at my home base KAWM and didn't even give me a call. Could have had some real Memphis BBQ, not that Texass beef.
  23. Really? Well I had Dmax install bladders in my 64E in 2001 ( was in Gladewater during 9/11). I'm certain O&N had just come out with the 10 gal option in late 2001, since I considered the option but it was not yet available as of Aug 2001.
  24. So long as you don't exceed the amp rating of the fuse behind the cigar lighter jack, you can also use a cable to back feed power from a car boost starter pack. This will easily power a single nav/com for hours. I used this once to get back from Dallas to Memphis in my 64E, and then carried it for months while I worked thru a intermittant issue with my alternator. So long as you have manual gear. Example; google this for the Walmart version; but any auto parts store should sell one: Stanley 'FatMax' 700-Amp Peak Jump Starter
