  2. This is the kind of situation where you should take the discrepancy list, separate out the non-airworthiness items and prioritize and group them because, as pointed out above, there are options and you need a roadmap for upgrades so your decisions work together. It's deceptively easy to piecemeal it and find out that the thing you bought last year won't work with the thing you want to buy this year. If you are willing to say what year and model airplane you have and publish the discrepancy list, I'm sure you will get lots of advice from the forum. Personally, I would ask the maintainer to explain each item and how they determined it needs to be done. For example, gear pucks have a specification in the maintenance manual and may well need to be replaced, but the shop should be able to tell you what they measured compared to the spec.

  3. LA city and airport management, "these airports are a burden on society, and take money from the people" Also LA city and airport management, "ideally located next to everything, an ideal airport location," and "please pay us now". It was not clear to me if this becomes a private airport and they can immediately exclude GA and charge fees, or they have received "control" of the airport but it remains a public airport without restrictions. I flew out of WHP for almost 20 years, always at risk of being closed down by the city. I watched SMO get squeezed by land developers that are pulling a fast one on the locals. So yes, a little jaded. -dan

  4. This is exactly why I own maintenance manual, illustrated parts catalog, research and interact on mooneyspace, and participate in my own maintenance. I’m a physician but have a mechanical background, and the thought processes for differential diagnosis and treatment of illness are the same as mechanical issues. I am blessed to have a great IA that I work with and he appreciates all off the research and information I bring to the table before anybody touches my airplane, including him. For example, about 15 years ago we removed the trim jack screw and sent to LASAR for service. All of the information was in the MM and had been discussed here on Mooneyspace, and we avoided this exact issue during installation and return to service. I am very thankful for this community ! As a couple of members stated above, this should be entered as a service difficulty report.

  5. How the hell are these installs getting out of the shop in the first place?? Some very concerning stuff come to light in this thread.

  7. Good advice here. I’ll tell you that a large annual after acquisition is pretty typical. Be careful with “cheap” solutions like the tail beacon. if all you want is compliance then it’s fine, but if you determine you want traffic later, you maybe spending twice. excited for you. I have loved and been excited about every Mooney I have ever had, and I have left them all better than I received them!

  8. I fed all 13 of the fatal Ovation NTSB accident analysis into AI and had it create a table that included some of the pertinent facts, the NTSB's probable cause findings and a 100 word summary of the accident. I then had the AI analyze the information to categorize the findings and provide some risk mitigation strategies. Both the AI derived table and the summarization are in the attached Excel file. My own (non-AI) summary of how to avoid fatal accidents is use good ADM (like avoiding flying unairworthy aircraft or flying into ice in a plane not certified for it) and practice instrument flying enough to remain very proficient. Take a look at the data and let me know what you think. jamie M20R Ovation Fatal Accident Analysis.xlsx

  9. The pulleys need to align in the same plane perpendicular to the crankshaft. Otherwise you will experience vibration, accelerated wear, noise or worst - throw the belt. Looks like you answered your own question and have it correct.

  10. I’d be willing to bet before you could get an stc approved they will reduce the size of this to an iPhone.

  13. We like to talk about the demise of GA because of crashes, availability of parts, insufficient pipeline of new pilots, etc. The real story is that when there are no airports available, the rest of it won't matter.

  15. Most any mechanic willing to do such an installation is going to require a DER’s blessing to approve it. Wings have part numbers. Substituting one part number for another constitutes a major alteration.

  20. It's fairly easy to find gross trim setting errors on preflight of a J or before by noting the elevator position with the trim set for takeoff. However, K's and later have a different trim system and the elevator rests full trailing edge down on the ground because of the bob weight. You should still be able to ground check it by rolling the trim wheel from stop to stop and noting that the trim position indicator moves fully in each direction. Since this problem is pretty serious and seems fairly common, someone who had the issue should file a SDR with the FAA so it can post an alert.

  21. This is VERY CONCERNING. This thread should be bolded and pinned. Someone is going to die from this! Let's NOT have that happen. Great information shared that seems to be a repeating installation problem.

  22. Pretty funny. To make it Mooney specific, he has one about our airplanes: Jon

  24. I use to hold Don Maxwell in high regards. Today I called to ask about some discrepancies he wrote up on a Mooney. The discrepancies made no sense to me. I use to work at the factory and I know these aircraft really well. As soon as I asked for clarification on a discrepancy Don went off, got rude and then hung up on me. Needless to say I was fuming. I am a professional as was completely caught off guard by such unprofessional behavior from one shop to another . There where also a few items that Don said where airworthy that according to Mooney and the FAA are not airworthy in nature. I called back and spoke to his wife. Of course she would defend him. The bottom line is I never got answers to my questions. I was very upset with how I was talked to. Those folks up there are just out of their minds. Dons wife threatened to call "Homeland Security" because I said I should fly up there and get the answers to my questions....? She said I was threatening her...? Crazy.. Sorry for the drama post, but folks need to know how Don Maxwell handles being questioned about what he finds on an aircraft. Completely taken aback.
