My engine is making metal and since its old - the time has come to overhaul it. My prop overhaul was done about 300 hours ago. Do I need to overhaul the governor and flush the prop hub to get rid of any metal flecks in there?

I was thinking a new engine is probably going to make metal - so why not just replace oil and filter after 1 hour flight or so .. that should also "flush" everything?

Thanks

You are going to have to have it overhauled. That metal wont come out of the governor without being disassembled.  FWIW, there are service letters on those governors and they frequently need new flyweights and a pilot valve. That stuff is expensive. Overhaul/exchange is probably cheaper than sending yours in and paying for the extra parts.

You can have the prop resealed for 500$ or so.  We did this.

I would flush everything. The cost to flush is small compared to a engine. All the oil doesn't go throught the filter. The front of the prop holds about 1/2 quart of oil. The prop shop can screw the cap off and clean in out in 20 minutes or so.

My prop was only 26 hr since new when I overhauled the engine. There was some really nasty stuff in it. They did it while I waited.

What type of gov you have? Hartzell H-1?

Not sure .. Anyway its out for the overhaul, might as well do it while the engine is out.
