I happened to meet the owner of an avionics shop at church yesterday. We had an very interesting conversation over lunch. Bill strongly encouraged me to get the Synthetic Vision feature in my new Aspen turned on. (The software is already in the PFD -- just takes money for the avionics dealer to unlock it.)

How about Pireps on Aspen SV?

Mine was free as a added value 2 years ago. At the time, it was not yet available. It is great VFR at night and somewhat helpful overall. I find the Aspen screen perhaps a bit to small for all of that pictorial data. Would I swap it for free map and wx subscriptions of similar value? Yes. Would I swap it for the connected cockpit module installed? Yes. Would I swap it for having my Strikefinder re-slaved and my ADF reconnected? Yes. Would I pay $3k for SVT? No. But I got it free and enjoy it.

Good luck with it Bob. Any questions? Just PM any time.

Hi Bob. I took a close look at SVT but had a hard time digesting the $3k cost. The promo they ran had it down to $2,500 but it was still too rich for my blood. My upper pain point for what this does is around $1,500. As was mentioned, I would rather spend the money on other things like an ADS-B receiver or turn on a stormscope. If the Connected Pilot was available for the GTN series, I would probably consider that over SVT. The only thing I liked about it that I thought would have been cool (provided it worked) was the pictorial you get when approaching an airport. Having it overlay where the airport is when popping out of the scud on an approach would be nice (again if it works).

Hi Bob, I had it installed as part of my panel upgrade. I am very happy with it. There are different options on how you can display it. It will depend on your preferences. If you look at my pictures in the gallery you can see the SV working.

Oscar, I like your panel, mine is not so different, and your destinations! I'm curious, when you are IMC, or flying at night, what mode do you usually select for the SV? Are there times when you find the SV is makes other info harder to find on the display?

I note Aspen usually has some kind of promotion going on, anyone think a discount on SV might come along?

Normally when I fly IMC I use the SV2 option, which puts SV on the Attitude indicator, but keeps the HSI part without the SV. Otherwise it gets too crowded.

Bob,

I really like you panel, do you have a JPI 930?

Bob,

Thanks Oscar, yes, I had a 450 and replaced it with the 930. It is really nice and, because it is primary, I was able you remove a lot of gauges and switches strung all over the panel. I think the new layout turned out very clean. Lots of power without clutter. (I already had the STEC 50, the Stormscope and a 696. New were the panel, the 930, the 750, the audiopanel, Xponder, and a GDL 88 which I only have flown 30 minutes.)
