I am supposed to be going with my best friend. The plan is at the moment to fly in a rented 182. Even if I do get my own Mooney in time, I'll probably still be in the dump truck. The problem is my friend is so damn big!! I don't think he would even fit in a Mooney and if I end up with a manual gear one, I doubt the J-bar would swing past his ass. I wish he would loose a ton of weight, but ain't happening I'm affraid. I'd love to hook up with the Mooney folks though. I promise not to park next to you.

My Dad and I will be flying in and camping.  I'm not going to be participating in the Mooney caravan but I hope to arrive around the same time and hopefully park somewhere nearby.

Just how big is he ? Tomorrow I'm flying with a guy that's 6'1", 270 lb. Add that to my 5'10", 230 lb and we'll fit in a Mooney with manual gear. Another friend is 6'3" and 265 and he owns a 1966 E model and I fly with him many times per year. You must have a really big friend to not fit in a Mooney  Surprised

Yep. Pretty big. I don't know his actual weight yet, but he's about 6'2" and well over 300lbs. Thing is, this year marks 40 years of us being friends and we've always wanted to fly into Oshkosh.  Sad thing is, because of his weight, his health isn't all that great, so I really want to get the trip done. The Skylane is a better choice for just getting in and out too. So, it might be a shame to rent a plane to get there while I might have my own sitting at home, but it's probably the better choice.

the Caravan sign-up should open May 1 from what I've read.  I plan to join the Caravan and bring my dad for his first OSH experience.  We will camp with the plane because I don't enjoy the logistics and expense of off-field lodging.  3 more months!

I will be going second weekend.  For more flexibility I fly in to Appleton (just North).  I have a friend that lives there and has "connections" with family that have been long time Oskhosh supporters.  Appleton treats you well and I believe they have a shuttle to and from Oshkosh.  I grew up in Platteville, (Southwest WI) and my dad and I (he was an artist and big time scale model builder) would drive up and sleep in the back of a VW stationwagon...Dad placed in an art contest up there with a couple of entrys.  I can remember R.A. "Bob" Hoover's show...VERY good memories.  Check out dad's display in the Museaum.  Tribute to Francis Gabreski.  Leading Allied ace in ETO.  He had a scratch built P-47 Thunderbolt model built by a master builder named Richard Howe in Massechusett's.  He would send information (research) on the plane in 8x11 manilla envelopes.  On each envelope he would do a custom scene such as a P-47 straffing a locomotive or a sketch of the chief designer...after the third envelope the Westminster post master hand delivered the envelope and said " You are keeping these, RIGHT"?Laughing  They had a nice display in the post office of the envelopes that made the local paper...Dad sent all around the world to get Gabby's medals...toughest one was the Polish Cross of Valor.  Dad did a display and took to Oshkosh...the curator was not impressed...until he saw the display.  Dad was an early eagle member and CAF Wing Man.  He loved Oshkosh.  Dad passed away at 62 in 1991.  I try and go each year in tribute to his memory.

FLY SAFE,

Scott

Scott.  We will view your Dad's display in the museum and we look forward to meeting you there.  Your Dad is your hero.  Making the trip to AirVenture is a powerful way to pay tribute to your Dad.  Thank you for sharing with us.

Thanks Mitch.  I usually check out display during another visit as there is SO MUCH TO SEE at show, but museum is worth a visit if you haven't seen display's before.  The Eagle's Hanger has some great WWII aircraft including a rare XP-51 and a P-38 made up like Dick Bong's with "Marge" on the side.  ENJOY ALL!  Hope to meet you at the show.  I usually miss out on the Mooney's as by second weekend the "birds have flown".  I enjoy the extended warbird fly by in the Air Show.  The sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin is in my humble opinion one of the most beautiful aural experiences...

Our plan is for us to fly our E model in on the 23rd with our friends along in their C model - both '65's.  Already bought the tickets to the Mooney Caravan BBQ.

Hi Jason.

The below information is quoted from the Mooney Caravan web site.  Have the 48 slots not been filled?

Caravan participation will be limited to 48 aircraft. However, additional registrants may sign up since there is traditionally significant attrition in the rolls between May and July. The order in which individuals sign up does not guarantee inclusion. Individual participation is at the discretion of the Flight Leader. Caravan volunteers who are working to make all this happen will have first priority for participation in the Caravan. (Here is another great reason to volunteer for one of the work groups!) Final selection will be based on a review of flight experience, prior Caravan participation, total and recent hours flown, and certificates/ratings. If you have not paid your registration fee, consider yourself a “standby” only. The registration fee MUST be received no later than June 10 to ensure participation. As of June 10, paid registrants not contacted by the Caravan Flight Leader may consider themselves accepted into the Caravan and all unpaid registrants will be moved to the bottom of the list.

I'll be there from the 26th to the 1st and this will be my FIRST Oshkosh.  Unfortunately, I am not bringing my plane, but may be next year.  My daughter is getting married on Sunday and my reward for surviving her wedding is escaping to OSH for a week of unadulterated aviation.  Flying commercially to Madison and renting a car to get there, but camping under the wing of a friend's Bonanza.  I'll miss the carvan BBQ, but still hope to meet some of the MooneySpace residents, perhaps around the MAPA or Mooney Ambassador tents.

I would love to do it, but not for my first year! I want to see everyone come in. I think it'll be exciting. I already got tickets to the BBQ and im sure the company alone will make it worth wild! Now I have something good to look forward to on sunday evening!

Thank you Jason for the invitation.  I am sorry to say but we are not bringing the Mooney this year.  We have air miles and are using those.  Next year, we'll bring the plane.  We will see you all at the BBQ though.  Have a fun flight into Whittman.
