Up for sale is an Aerosonic Encoding altimeter, P/N 101627-01544. It has a current yellow tag and calibration from Air Tech in Seattle, ready to install to replace your broken one!

This is a bargain at $750 outright. [Edit Feb 21 2014, best offer accepted] PM me for details!

Yes, as opposed to the currently more popular and potentially less expensive to maintain option of having a "blind" encoder that works in concert with your altimeter and transponder. The later allows you to just replace or get the part fixed that is broken.

Encoding altimeters are very nice and expensive instruments. Mine came so-equipped and about a year and a half ago something on the inside of mine must have shorted out because it's circuit breaker tripped and wouldn't reset. I explored my options and ended up doing a repair/exchange with an instrument shop in Texas for something like $850, primarily just so it would be a plug and play fix and would avoid some rewiring. This is potentially a good deal if anyone here needs one.

Thanks Jim. That's what i thought they did. I have a blind encoder. Still trying to verify if i indeed have a problem with it. I just did a quick look on the internet for blind encoder prices. Maybe it is time to retire my 30 year old box?

If you get a new blind encoder go ahead and get one that supports both serial and parallel output.  Transcal makes some nice compact units that supports multiple output formats.

Ok, quick update. I have been getting ATC feedbacks on my reported altitude. Most facilities are reporting that I am 100' higher than my corrected altimeter reading in the plane. A few are reporting that I am 200' high. So I can trying to decide my next steps. My next IFR cert isn't until December. So, if I replace my blind encoder, I assume I will need to have the IFR cert redone.

I guess I have other options including updating my 20 year old transponder with something that will get me ADS-B out capbility. Any recommendations?

Chris,

New transponders with push button activation are looking quite nice this time of year!!!

Beats the old memory challenging, rotating wrong direction, knobs of old... And you get ADSB out with the new digital look.

Specific for your situation, it displays the altitude it thinks you're at!

Best regards,

Norman is looking for a customer with an airframe TT potentially at or greater than 10,000hrs.

The one guy that matches this requirement has already bought a replacement!

Sorry Norman, it may take a little longer...

Best regards,
