I finally filled up that ugly blue "Cessna" logbook my friend gave me. Now I know why he bought something else when he started flying. Do I start the first line with my first flight logged as a continuation of my previous logbook, or do I use it as some sort of total? How do I go about transferring/duplicating endorsements that aren't on my certificate (complex, high performance, et cetera).

Since there is no requirement to keep a log book per se, or to carry it with you, you are free to do it any way you like. I just labelled my 2nd log book as "No. 2" and started the first line with my first (next) flight. At the bottom of the first page, I brought forward my previous hours in each category, so starting the 2nd page, the numbers were all up to date.

If you feel you will need to verify an indorsement, you might wish to keep both the old and new books together until the information is not needed.

After a period of time you will get signed off with a new Flight Review, IPC, etc. which will be placed in the new book, so the old one becomes almost irrevelant.

Naturally, in the event of an enforcemant action, you might be required to produce information from an earlier source, but you are always afforded time to retrieve the old book.

There's a page at the front of mine titled "Certificates, Ratings and Operating Privileges Earned" with spots for certificate numbers, dates, etc. There's no place for signatures, only dates. Then you will know which book to look in, if you ever need to check it later.

Every page for logging flights has a row called "Previous Page," so that is another link to the previous book.

If you're worried, write "Book #1" beside those. When you get a third book, write "Book #2" beside the new ones and "Book #1" beside the old ones.

But what do I know? I'm still on my first logbook, Page 80; last available is Page 96, with ten lines per double page (lots of columns). I started on Page 8 in October '06, so I still have a while to figure it out.
