I have never landed at a class B airport. I need to pick someone up there. I will be coming in IFR. Anyone knows that airport. Is it very busy? Is there any fees? Should I land at a nearby class D airport instead and ask the person to take a cab?

Thank You

Signature is an 80$ fee. Atlantic is a 50$ fee, but waived with the purchase of 15 gallons of 8$ gas (30$ over the going rate). the landing there is easy, MSY is a relatively slow airport.

yes it is easy to land there at KMSY. I've done it in the past yes the landing fees are pricy but if you are picking somone up or dropping off it is worth it. Ask them they most likely will go over to the terminal and pick you pass up and bring them to the FBO. I droped one off and they brought him over to the terminal.

Where are you coming from?

MSY is pretty slow for a class B airport and has great controllers, you shouldn't have any trouble getting in or out. I used Atlantic, they waived the ramp fee with 10 or 15 gallons at $8/gallon. Parking was fairly reasonable at $17/night. I don't remember the ramp fee with no fuel purchase, but as of May, I think it was like $40 or something. They are happy to drive you to/from the terminal provided you arrive before 10pm.

If you land on 10 or 28, you just take the turnoff halfway down the runway to the GA ramp, Atlantic is on one side and Signature is on the other. When leaving you can do an intersection departure at Charlie and have about 5000ft remaining on 10 or 28.

Just for the sake of clarity, isn't it safe to say there are no "landing" fees per se as it is a public-use airport funded by the government? It's true that the FBOs will charge a ramp fee, but that's different than a "landing" fee I believe. I ask the question because I am curious in my own right about the difference. People (non GA people) often ask me about landing fees and my stock answer has always been that our public airports don't have any, so I'm trying to validate that assumption.

Check out Lakefront KNEW. Easy in and out for you and your passenger.

Yes use KNEW if you passenger is not flying commercial into KMSY. Flightline First is a good FBO.

KNEW is much preferred if your pax is already on the ground in New Orleans and has a reasonable way to get to you, but if you're picking them up after a commercial flight, then have no fear of going into the big airport. Make sure you can actually purchase enough fuel to get the ramp fee waived, though, and don't sweat the higher fuel price since you'll be saving your pax a lot of money for a long cab ride and a big time delay!

There are public airports that charge a landing fee. Santa Monica (KSMO) is a famous example, if you keep up on the fight to save our airports. Recently someone mentioned one in Florida. These are landing fees, and not ramp fees.

SFO charges landing fees based on weight, but the minimum landing fee for all fixed-wing aircraft is $205 (http://www.flysfo.com/assets/investor/SummaryChargesFY1213.pdf).
