Ask Beechtalk. They don’t have a paywall and they don’t have this problem.

They do manual user verification, which Craig mentioned was impractical

Are there people dumb enough that they click those links and go along with whatever scam it’s trying to run?   Seems so obvious it’s spam I don’t get the point of it

Beechtalk has 35,000 members.  At least 10 times more than MooneySpace. Explain why it’s practical for them but not us.

There are clearly ways to deal with automated posts, and different forum platforms have different options. Craig mentioned that the current version of IPBoard has limitations, and he was hoping for an upgrade that would help.

I’d be very happy with an occasional MFA prompt if it means stopping the spam.

Why not freeze current members, delete all the offending automated members and any new members are vetted through a manual process?

This has gotten so bad today - I agree that the board should prevent new account creation until this is sorted.

Seriously how many new members can there be?

KISS.

Keep it simple stupid

If you’re the admin today, you might have many hundreds of new accounts that look legitimate. It’s only because they post spammy crap that they’re clearly spam. Manual verification would be super painful on a day like this - my vote would be to shut down new account signups until there’s better automation in place.

All, I’m as frustrated as you are. I am still a board mod from the days when I owned a Mooney. I sold it five years ago, but I still provide input from time-to-time. You need to send @mooniac58 (Craig) messages as he’s the site owner and I don’t have the access to change how registrations are done.

I’ve flagged all the new posters as spammers, but I run LancairLive, which keeps me busy enough. This is for Craig to fix and figure out a way forward. There is a great Google spambot plugin that works great at weeding out new registrations. It blocks them before they can create an account. I suggest that tool (or similar) for Mooneyspace.

Is that how you keep the crap out of LancairLive?

The forum software we use (IPBoard4) does not have a lot of additional options to try and stop bot registrations and I am using everything available short of manually approving new registrations, which I frankly just don't have the time to do.

Maybe some of us could help. Is there are a way you could could delegate that function?

Because Craig owns and runs Mooneyspace as a hobby, and he's the only administrator. There are a few mods, but only admins can do this; he is not willing to create new admins, as they can also erase the whole site . . . .

I'm not an IT type, so I can't buy it and do any better. Not that I've heard it's for sale!

Blasted the last 2 accounts that started spamming.  Again, these are not new accounts but rather old accounts they have from before they never used.  We will just keep nuking them all until there are none left...

Must be a semi-clever script containing a list of user names.  It was less than 60 seconds after you blasted "sweety" before I got the first one from markjoedsr546.

Or just an AI bot they assigned to this task.  Would be childs play for an AI setup to run this whole operation and keep track of accounts, posts as well as our typical response times, etc, etc.

Ok, I’m here everyday, but I must have blinked. What’s the “upgrade membership” banner about. Has my supporter status lapsed? What’s the complete profile info? I’m afraid to click on anything these days.
