Vacuum pump removal after G3X upgrade.

Hello
I just installed a G3 X system into my bravo.

I am looking to remove the vacuum since it is not needed anymore.

Can I remove both pumps or just the top one.

On the lycoming engine parts catalog, it shows the second pump area is a turbo scavenge pump.

Is that really a turbo scavenge pump or the standby vacuum pump that can be removed?

Asking you all before going to the shop to talk to the mechanic about it.

You can and should remove the pumps.  It will cost  some money but it makes the back of the engine easier to access for maintenance.  Getting all the vacuum stuff behind the instrument panel will be a lot more work but the cleanup is worthwhile.

Since you are an early TLS serial number you may have vacuum speed brakes. If you do have them and you remove the vacuum system you will lose the speed brakes.

That is a great opportunity to sink another 10+ AMUs into this project by replacing the vacuum speed brakes with electric ones

Exactly the route i went eventually till i could no longer maintain the vacuum speed brakes due to the vacuum canister.
Cost several AMU’s but since brakes are standard equipment for both our Turbo’s it’s either pay now and enjoy them or pay later when you sell it in the form of a discount.

Do they fit in our wings? I saw a retrofit (a K - don't we all have the same wing?) and the speed brakes were sticking out of the wing and there was some gaudy plate that covered them.

Speed brakes fit? Sure in at least any C and up? Yes same wing not including wing tips.
The speed brakes you describe with a flat plate on the top of the wing sounds like the very rare hydraulic brake. The vast majority of Speed Brakes are Precise speed brakes that sit inside the wing till extended from several systems over the years from manual, to vacuum to electric.

I think you are missing what I was asking about. I have the pneumatic speed brakes installed in '89. I saw a K with the electric ones and there was a cover plate installed (with the hole for the brakes) because the tops of the brakes stuck out over the wing. I had heard that they were larger than the -100 speed brakes.

Precise speed brake cartridges should fit entirely in the wing. The electric ones do have a shiny aluminum cover plate but brake should be fully inside till deployed. If anything i think the electric ones are smaller than the old vacuum brakes.
