Max Clark Posted June 17, 2024 Report Posted June 17, 2024 I'm flying my new (to me) M20R Ovation from Dallas to Los Angeles this Thursday (6/20). First long flight with the plane, an opportunity for training is sure to come up. My CFI who was going to make the flight with me threw his back out this weekend and is out. I'm looking for someone who can join on crazy short notice (not ideal but could push to Friday if necessary). I've been calling around the Mooney CFI list https://themooneyflyer.com/cfi.html but figured I should try here as well. Please DM me if you're interested, or if you have any ideas. Thanks! Quote

Does your insurance policy specifically require a CFI or does it have an “Open Pilot Clause” which allows any pilot with specified sufficient hours in retract gear, type and perhaps Instrument Rating? That might expand the pool for you. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted June 17, 2024 Report Posted June 17, 2024 FWIW, in my opinion, a long cross country isn't great training in a new airplane. You are just sitting there doing nothing most of the time. 2 Quote

I know a guy that could probably do it if insurance doesn't require a Mooney CFI/CFII. He's got time in JetProps, Beechcraft and other high performance aircraft, he's more than capable of it. I've flown with him and he's a good pilot and not terrible company. Quote

Great time to get training on the avionics, play with weather resources, talk XC strategy, get war stories from a more experienced pilot, etc. On my dual repo flight from Texas we had *plenty* of wx to strategize around and dip into... Always good to do it first with someone else. My 2 cents. If you have $3.97 more you can get a cup of coffee at Starbucks... 1 Quote

I was coming from a point of view that the pilot was an experienced cross country flyer and just needed transition training. Quote
