Looks like I'm going to pull the trigger on the MVP-50 engine monitor!

Can anyone provide any tips, suggestions, feedback

Just going through the required configuration form (3 pages) and trying to determine what function and indicator / warning I should include.

What can we do for the landing gear gear up, gear down ???

Any suggestion would be appreciated

@donkaye has had an MVP-50 longer than probably anyone else on Mooneyspace.

Seems simple, but make sure you use all the fields. I bought my plane with an MVP-50 and there is an empty field above Est. Fuel that I would love to have used for something (eg TAS prior to my Aspen upgrade, or maybe gear status after the aspen (if the usual gear indicator light burned out)). Unfortunately, I don't believe this can be changed anywhere but the EI factory.

My impression is also that the MVP-50 refresh rate might lag that of the EDMs. This is based only on watching youtube pilots lean and noticing that I need a lot more time for things to settle than they seem to, but maybe that's just me and/or my sensors/plane.

That said, these are nit-picky complaints and overall I'm very happy to have it over the factory gauges (and happy I didn't have to cover the upfront install cost).

E. I. came out with a better resolution screen and better refresh rate around 2018 I think. @oregon87 could tell you how much it is to upgrade to the newer display.

That's good to know; I'd be super interested in this. Thanks

I sent my unit back into EI for the upgrade.  Certainly looks more fitting with the Garmin screens.  I didn't have mine installed originally so not sure how many options you have and how much is set spec to your aircraft.  EI has been easy to work with with probes, screen upgrade and programming with fuel senders, and set up.  For experimental you can have WAV files for warnings.  I wish we had the option for that with certified!

Installing the MVP-50 was one of the best decisions I made with my upgrade.  In my opinion it is the best stand alone engine monitor out there.  Yes, JPI is worthy, but the MVP-50 has more versatility for my usage.  I've attached my worksheet to show how I set mine up.  With the M20C you won't have TIT.  The small box between the MP and RPM turns red and shows gear not down, if the gear is not down below a certain MP.  There is an extra register on the fuel page that displays trip totals and resets on engine shutdown that I find extremely  useful.   There is the ability to set 2 automatic fuel levels when adding fuel; in my case 89 gals to the bottom of the neck and 100 gals topped off.  There are too many other benefits of the unit to mention in this small space.

At the time I upgraded my display the cost was a little over $1,400.  If you are buying new, you will get the new display.  The functionality also increased with the upgrade, in particular the ability to see time to destination instead of time to waypoint--to me a MAjOR improvement for trip planning. and execution.

Perfect thank you for the worksheet

I ordered the unit through spruce

Spoke with Electronics International and they said I can supply the work sheet next week.

Mine will be a little different than your being 12 volt / carbureted

I think it is important what data you see in the Blue data blocks.  I like having the "local time" and the 'in air time".  I have the "total time" that goes in my logbook read off of the GTN 650.  I record the "in air time" on a spreadsheet for future reference.  Also important is the cooling rate of the fastest cooling cylinder, since this prevents shock cooling if attention is paid to it.  Then "Is the gear down of not?"  Just one more indication of it.  And then, of course, the TIT for turbocharged engines is important along with fuel remaining.

Hey guys - can one of you share the rough install cost for one of these on a 4 cyl?

I looked back on my invoice from 2014 and I was charged 40 hours for installation of the 6 cylinder MVP-50.  Except for wiring a couple of CHT and EGT probes the 4 cylinder should be close to the same.

Install is the easy part!
The panel reconfiguration is the time consuming part.

when you remove the redundant instrumentation

Mine was installed as part of a major panel upgrade.

Maxwell installed my MVP-50 in 2011, still going strong.  I asked him about EI versus JPI and he said EI is better.  When I asked why, he just said it is.  Love Don Maxwell.

I would add 8yrs with a AC560 and 20yrs with a C320.  Never had an engine monitor in either.  Never had an issue.  Pretty screens and nice to have (I like mine) but I disagree with the general sentiment that your 55yr old airplane will self destruct without a modern engine monitor.
