At Palomar, the county built a north ramp for GA tie downs as new jet FBOs were built on the south side.  After getting pushed around from FBO to FBO on the south side for years, I was one of the first to reserve a north ramp tie down.  I like it.  Self serve fuel and a porta-pottie but it’s good enough.  Future plans involve moving the runway further north into the north ramp area but I doubt it’ll happen in my flying lifetime.

It takes a politically obsessed mind to equate the requested removal of a rotting, deregistered, unairworthy, ramp queen that has been sitting for twenty plus years with capitalistic greed and the destruction of the public good. This Aircraft has probably been in violation of its lease agreement for several years now. This situation is entirely the making of the owner/estate that holds title. This was a desirable and marketable aircraft that could have been sold decades ago but was instead neglected and allowed to languish. At best this situation was facilitated by an unfortunate string of events. At worst it was facilitated by an owner’s stubborn refusal to sell or by infighting/disputes among the heirs. The only place capitalism had anything to do with this is in your head.

The truth is in especially the more Urban large city areas the little guys are in fact being priced out of being able to afford to stay there as everybody is in fact chasing the biz jets and their money. Where I live now it’s happening in Ocala as they chase the rich, race horse crowd and their jets.

Even in my old stomping grounds in South Ga if you park on the ramp this time of year you will likely be asked to move, you will be told they are expecting a jet to come in to drop off hunters for the local plantation this afternoon and of course the jet has to park right up front, which makes no sense really because they will be met at the airplane by SUV’s sent by the Plantation wherever the park, and the jet often will not stay as it’s a Charter.

Now this jet isn’t buying fuel and beside dropping off hunters isn’t contributing a nickel to the airport and likely due to its weight is harming the runway etc., but the city owns the airport and they bend over backwards for the perception of money, I say perception because not a nickel is spent except at the Plantation, they don’t go into Camilla Ga for anything as there isn’t anything there.

So you move more into the country, where the airport is in danger of being closed because a developer wants to build condos and a golf course, so the County closes it and sells for cheap thinking the income from taxes will make the County money.

But the honest truth is we expect the City / County to be on the hook for millions, but expect to tie down or rent hangar space cheap. By the time they run the thing with typical Government efficiency they are deep in the red, and very few in the City / County even fly.

Surely if it weren’t for some kind of grants they would have closed long ago?

There are so few of us that actually fly our little airplanes anymore, no real money is made from tie down fees of the derelicts and the ramps are full of them.

When I was a kid in the 60’s it was hard to wash your airplane as so many were out washing theirs, on any given weekend day there would be 8 or 10 aircraft coming or going, there were two FBO’s with follow me trucks that would race to the taxi way to try to entice arrivals to follow them to their FBO.

Same town now has more than twice the population, one run down FBO, same old WWII era leaky dirty hangars, locked gates with security badges and codes to get in, and not even 1/10 the traffic it had 40 years ago with less than half the population.

It’s not just airplanes though, it’s boats too, Marina’s are being sold to developers to build Condos, each Condo get a slip, and the ones trying to hang in are full of derelicts that never move.

Marina’s are chasing the Yachts just like the airports are chasing the biz jets and the Yachts cost just as much and burn just as much fuel, and trust me the number of large crewed Yachts is far more than you would think, where they were exceeding rare years ago they are common now and every year there are more, it’s the only thing making money in the Marine industry now, just like aviation.

I think both are in fact a sign of the shrinking Middle class or in fact the increasing difference between the wealthy and everyone else. The plumber, electrician, Pharmacist, even the Dr and Dentists don’t have near the money they used to, where they were the ones buying new airplanes in the 60’s and 70’s they just don’t have the money to buy a new airplane now.

The same people used to buy medium sized sail and power boats, but as it got to where they can’t anymore, boat builders have gone under the same as airplane builders have, however the Yacht builders are in the same position the biz jet manufacturers are, that is they are profitable and sold out for years.

Welcome to the 21st Century :)

Camilla Ga airport as viewed from a Crop Duster, notice no riff raff Cessna’s, Pipers or Mooney’s on the ramp, they aren’t allowed

But hey- you got some cheap landscaping and the “imported” nanny didn’t cost much, right?

Aviation continues to suffer as responsibility, morality and the fabric of our families continues to be frayed by “newer”, and “better?” Choices. We used to make aviation mechanics and pilots as many of us looked up at the sky wanting to fly - today, people want to be influencers or succeed at their only fans presence. No wonder ramps are emptying and mechanics and pilots are hard to find…or artisans in general.

I just picked up a similar situation in Southern California. A neglected Comanche 180 was sitting on the ramp for over 20. Three bladed prop, complete with engine, interior, no missing fairings….just unclipped the wings and slapped it on two trailers….

One of my guys wants to overhaul the o360a1a himself, all the surfaces are already removed and stripped…ready for paint.

Only the radios are missing. I got a mark 12d on my shelf that fits right in, a flybuddy and a transponder ….no rewiring yet. I got all the radios.

The beautiful thing about Comanches is that the were chromated at the factory….the plane looked awful- algae growing on the wings.. After stripping? Zero surface corrosion….

I guess I could try doing this in communist China but not sure how well I’d fare :) with the advent of ADSB and the upcoming intended direct billing or taxation tied to using the system, we will see how much people like it as we keep sliding into socialism…

No fair….I thought I was the resident curmudgeon! These are all cultural issues and I agree with many of your sentiments. GA (in addition to many other activities) is taking a back seat to screen time. It’s not just kids, it’s all of us.

At my drome and others, turbines are subsidizing the pistons. No way we’d have the facilities we have without turbines. I expect to pay more in a major metropolitan area. I fly into Philly or Atlanta, those FBOs are not going to survive topping my Mooney off with 35 gallons 100LL. I haven’t flown into PDK since Aerocenters bought Epps, but I always received first class service when landing there. Brand new courtesy car, private workspace, free snacks and beverages, etc. turbines and turbine money make this whole thing work.

Someone gotta deal

That's probably still a bit high, imho, but definitely more manageable than the last ending bid.    I was thinking $0-$5k is about right, especially if they need it moved soon.

More than salvage price but may be a good one to fix up - if an A&P. Shame it was wasting away after obviously well loved in the past…

That’s an io-360 core value and everything else is profit if dismantled. Going to take some work either way but just maybe it has good bones for a resurrection, hope so anyway. I like to see others take a chance like I did with mine, good times.

Thanks!  That's what I get for being too lazy to look at all the images!

Me too!  I had the same question.  So, this will effectively be an E with speed mods once someone brings her back to life.
