r0ckst4r Posted November 9, 2023 Report Posted November 9, 2023 I went to fly the Ovation last weekend and when I powered up the JPI EDM 700 didn't. No flickering just black. Reset the fuses and still nothing. I'm going to poke around a little this coming weekend with my multi-meter to see at least it is getting power but just wanted to check in with you guys to see if anyone had any experience with this or know what pins should be hot when testing. Looking at pictures of the back of one online doesn't show me an obvious place to test for power, just a bunch of serial ports. I'm assuming one of those connectors has a power and ground coming off it but any little tid bits of info would be welcome before I take a look. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted November 9, 2023 Report Posted November 9, 2023 The installation manual is available on the JPI website and will give you the pin detail. Quote
Aerodon Posted November 9, 2023 Report Posted November 9, 2023 It's quite possible that the EDM700 has an inline fuse to the busbar? I have replacement units that you can try for a quick change. Aerodon Quote
PeteMc Posted November 10, 2023 Report Posted November 10, 2023 The first thing I used to say to my guys when they came to me with a problem was "is it plugged in?" That holds true with avionics. Though unlikely, if the connector(s) did make their way loose over the years, there was going to be that one day that it just wouldn't turn on. And if the display or unit has bit the dust, JPI is still maintaining them. So you can opt to upgrade or just get the 700 fixed. Quote

When I bought my plane the EDM 800 was INOP because the plug had come loose on the back of the unit. This would be check #1. Then go through and check all the rest of the connections, fuses etc. there is a decent chance the unit went bad. If that is the case you might consider the screen only upgrade to a 730 or 830 which runs about 1500-1600. The larger color screen is nice. Install is very minimal. Quote
r0ckst4r Posted November 12, 2023 Author Report Posted November 12, 2023 Well, I managed to check the connections and they seem secure. Unfortunately, because of where is is positioned it was extremely difficult to get back there and test with the multimeter without some significant disassembly which I wasn't prepared for. Going to have to just take it to the avionics shop, and probably go for the 730 upgrade JPI offers. Quote
