Just got back from OSH and all fun things aviation.

I was really impressed with the velocity twin getting a pair of delta-hawk diesels.  It could make for an interesting twin.

To that effect I got thinking - has anyone tried putting a diesel on a Mooney?  A 265-300 HP continental diesel opposed piston power plant on a J could be like a FADEC driven modern, but more efficient rocket / missile conversion at a similar weight penalty.

IO550G is 509 lbs. CD300 is 584. IO360 is like 350 lbs. adding 220 pounds on the nose might be pretty hard. However compared to the TSIO550, the CD300 is only like another 30 lbs heavier. CD300 might be a great option for the Acclaim and Bravo.

Could also be paired with a composite prop (save about 25lb) and oil cooler in the belly (like a p51d) that would make the weight penalty pretty negligible or offset by the higher energy density of jet - a.  Apparently because the torque is so high on these engines, the mount and prop needs to be able to take it.

I wonder if a composite would take the abuse.  That was one of the issues Doug Doers was struggling with years ago.  The pulses from the diesel were hard on props.

Rocket engineering enters the chat :)
