I have seen some nice Ovations but most have original Garmin 1000 that apparently can’t be upgraded now or fixed if they go south. So what is the next step with those birds? Are there drop in replacements that are legal and acceptable such as new glass panels and what is replacement cost for Garmin full panel.

Go O1!

Start with a fresh clean sheet…

Build panel to suit…

Pay extra if you find one with the 310hp upgrade, and all BK panel…

No guilty feelings when pulling all the old BK stuff out…

:)

Best regards,

I am looking to replace with late 90’s or early 2000 ovation type plane.

There is no such thing as an Ovation type plane.  :-)

Seriously, at present there is no upgrade path for G1000 Ovations and Acclaims to the G1000NXi.  Although it is technically/mechanically possible, there's no legal upgrade path for a G1000 owner to scrap his/her entire cockpit and install a new panel.  You're better-off looking for something in the 1995 - 2004 genre that can be modified to your liking.

They can be upgraded now to current software level and WAAS. Don Maxwell and Brian Kendrick do WAAS upgrades to original G1000 airplanes with used GIA63W units that they currently have. Replacement screens are readily available on the secondary market and through Garmin.

That's one reason why I don't like all glass.  Can you go to ASPEN, JPI etc or combination of them?

No, since the G1000 is part of the Type Certificate you need to stay with it unless someone develops an STC. I seriously doubt Garmin is going out of business though so no need to worry.

Not on a G1000 airplane (2005 or later) that was type-certified as such through Mooney.

The only subset of those who are essentially locked into a certain configuration are those with the G1000.  All others can mix and match anything they want.  The G1000 can be WAAS-upgraded (as @LANCECASPER pointed out), however, the NXi upgrades are still unobtainium.  You're obviously free to like or dislike anything you want, but painting all glass cockpits with the same brush as your earlier comment doesn't seem fair.

As @Schllc aways points out when this subject comes up (which is often on Mooneyspace), the people who are worried about this and not fans of the G1000 are the ones who haven't flown behind it on the Mooney. I used to be one of them and now I own one.

Not correct.  Garmin supports the many thousands of G1000 -equipped planes  in the fleet.  I recently had an MFD replaced under warranty in one day.

G1000and GFC700 is all I’ve flown for the last 14 years, and it is an excellent combination that lacks nothing I’d spend big money on.

So the the options of mid 2000 Mooney with G1000 avionics are:

All avionic components that are required for airworthiness can and as far as one can say be reasonably expected now in the next 3 years will be repairable if not upgradable by Garmin or another vendor or shop.

YES

NO

MAYBE

Should an owner of  WAAS G1000 or non-WAAS G1000 expect to have their MFD, computer or any parts not on warranty associated with the G1000 required for airworthiness replaced within 3 to 6 month months of first contact with Garmin or avionics shop that services GARMIN products?

Hopefully the answer is yes and yes.

Fly safe.
