I found what I needed for adjusting stall vane. Not sure if can loosen the screws enough. I tried it before I read the manual and it did not seem to move but perhaps the screws were not loose enough or there is more to moving warning vane forward.
  1. I found this in previous post and would like to know if it might be feasible to swap left with right ailerons so that very minor hail blemishes would be less noticeable facing down. "As another avenue to save costs, I was told you can swap your left and right elevators (flipping them) so the minor dings were facing down and basically not seen."
  2. This fellow and his son were both pilots and his son still work on planes, not mine I trust the other FBO mechanics manager. The other one I trust likes 50 degree rich of peak. I have no idea what caused the deformed piston but it scared the heck out of me. I do not want to get into lean of peak vs rich of peak debate. If “I try to keep cylinder and oil temps up and descend slowly but always try to keep the mixture on rich side while descending.” is incorrect help me understand. If I let it go without enriching in the descent then the engine stumbles so I enrich the mixture till it stops. I am not defending him like I said I use the other guys. So are you explaining that the mechanic/pilot was incorrect and running to lean and resulting overheating was not probable cause of the loss of the cylinder as he was illustrating to group? Can you explain how you monitor you exhaust temperature in descent if slightly enriching is incorrect? Thanks Steve
  3. An airplane mechanic showed me the results of what he said was failure to enrich on descent from cruise. Burnt exhaust valve that fell into piston. According to him bad things happen by overheating cylinders and values on descent by not enriching. I enrich my IO360 to keep cylinder head temperatures lower than cruise in descent or climb. I try to keep cylinder and oil temps up and descend slowly but always try to keep the mixture on rich side while descending.
  4. This is fact. You must use motorcycle oil designed for wet clutches or oil designed for Honda side by side engines or you will need to rebuild the Honda transmission. As I understand what the Honda tech told me it is the oil from engine that also lubricates the transmission and clutches and never use extended use or normal engine oil in the crankcase. If an oil reduces friction then a clutch that must have friction will not work well if at all. I use camguard in my planes especially in winter as I have a lycoming cam lobe failure in the past. Like to see wear results on piston rings and cylinders and oil consumption changes with and without camguard.
  5. Seems dumb to post things that could harm Mooney pilots. Frequently posting or jokes over age problems that may or may not impact others and numerous accidents descriptions are not helping your future insurance rates or eligibility. I just had several no we don’t want him because of age. No accidents, gear ups, runway excursions, or taxi incidents in over 20 years.
  6. After my engine had an extensive IRAN I had engine installed and dual magneto overhauled and put back on the engine. When the dual magneto was set it was set to a different engine so it was not firing correctly for my IO360. It was hard to start and missed and I knew something was not right. Changing the setting corrected the timing problem.
  7. I have tried it. Seems to cause a little variation in climb. Maybe because I am not even with pressure and rudder causes that. Where I heard it can be important is to get slush off brakes that may have accumulated during taxi or takeoff. Would avoid frozen brakes when landing. Also heard you do not want to retract while the wheels are still spinning so I wait and don’t retract immediately . Seems like I can till when they stopped spinning.
  8. I have not seen that error code?
  9. Appears I did get the print and digital versions so Toto is correct. I have not got print versions yet so I may ask to delete them if the printed versions come later. https://www.flyingmag.com/subscribe-to-flying/?_gl=1*1mtsc87*_ga*NjgwMTQwMjMzLjE3MDM2MjA0MTk.*_ga_539K6FFJWT*MTcwMzg2MzY5My4yLjEuMTcwMzg2MzcyMy4zMC4wLjA. https://emagazines.com/library?plid=58
  10. Aviation safety has some good scary stories.
  11. I got the offer by email. It is digital only.
  12. Suggest you consider the bundle offered by flying magazine. Includes aviation consumer, IFR, plane and pilot, aviation safety, flying, and a couple of others. you can use an iPad to view, some magazines have recorded stories.
  13. I did not ask. I am not sure how much good it will be if there is truly a big event. I am afraid the 100,000 per person that mine has will not be near what will happen if a fault is determined.
  14. “2023 $2997.00” My cost was about $3,000 this August for $165,000. Actual VREF rate was substantially more. Fellow friend pilot is forgoing insurance. Twin insurance was uninsurable according to my broker. Avemco stated due to lack of twin experience and/or age not insurable above $200,000 airframe.
  15. My situation when I first got my what I believe was a poor overhaul that left out new cam followers. I never went back just forward. I feel I was taken severe advantage of again during an annual. They did couple pages of fix it things that I don’t believe any where airworthiness. My bad for trusting a place I did business with more than a decade ago. I will never go back. Hopefully you have couple of places with a good help maintaining the plane. Only 2 bad experiences in nearly 20 years is pretty darn good. Good luck.
  16. I have read more than one report of baggage doors coming open in flight that were not locked. One explained some substantial damage to horizontal stabilizer. I hope no one ever has to crawl out of baggage door but you are supposed to be able to tear off the plastic cover and pull the emergency latch out to open from inside. I always lock my baggage door as that is where my border collies sleep. I have replaced the original ignition key switch. Now I have 2 similar keys on my key ring.
  17. I have my plane insurance broker list the hangar owners as additionally insured which makes the the owners happy and my insurer just needs the name of owner and their address with no additional costs so far to my policy.
  18. I hope you find the plane you need. I am 6’3” and 230. I find the seat front seat legroom more comfortable after a couple hours than upright seats in a Cessna twin. With MSE M20J I am able to set the seat back and completely stretch out my legs. I have to crawl out and in but it about same as our Stingray. Unless you have adult backseat passengers and want a hauler the Mooney makes reasonable speed for cross country and appears to be the most efficient plane at substantially less acquisition and maintenance. If I had frequent multi-state mission a larger twin or a single with a bigger 6 cylinder would fit better and probably be more comfortable and have better dispatch than Mooney but I never had the experience of the bravo or acclaim. All the bigger better faster choices will come with accelerated costs. As mentioned you can review some excellent historic Mooney discussions on Mooney space by adding the appropriate key search word(s).
  19. AOPA December 2023 Dr Brent Blue’s Oxygen is Oxygen great article. Oxygen on board is not just for flying over Rocky Mts. Do it yourself can be convenient and reasonable.
  20. Congratulations nice plane I was following on Comptroller. You did well enjoy your ride.
  21. Found 340 oxygen plug rated to 3000 psi from western enterprises sold by airgas and advance tools. Appears could seal exit of tanks or trans filler lines. Chain & Plug Assemblies, Plug Assembly, 3,000 psi, Oxygen, Brass Features: One and two-piece assemblies provide gas-tight sealing | CGA nut and blind nipple (plug) combination Testing And Approvals: Meet all CGA Specifications for Sealing Manifolds and Cylinders $9.56 airgas $25..10 Low cost enough to use as safety seals for your portable or supply tank.
  22. Thanks for all the good information. I am in process of exploring what is needed. The fill up place in town has to ship my oxygen tank to St. Louis when they have enough to fill the truck. Airgas says 2 weeks or more. At least that is what they quoted me. I am in process of buying one tank and have a trans filler coming that can use 2 tanks. I have just bought a Trans filler for one tank. An extra tank , or buying only the extra tank valve, or having an in line valve, or plug made might keep me from buying a 3rd tank. I have not seen a reasonable alternative for in-line shutoff with needed connecting hardware. Also I may have another source for oxygen but he is mostly retired and not likely to continue and may stop working altogether One will do me for a while but seems like waste to have to send it back with 700 or 1000 psi although that maybe cost of the business. FBO or other suppliers seem to be shorting the 2200 psi the tanks hold but maybe they just can’t keep full tanks as they use them to top off and takes some out of the system each time they are used.
