So perhaps I am an idiot, but is there anyway to get a G5 to give you vertical GPS guidance when using the Vertical Nav FPS setting on a 430W?   I get the GPS message, but I was hoping for a vertical nav guidance indication like with a GPS approach. Is that possible? Images of what I have setup now in the Garmin.  G5 is per the install manual ( we think!).

Bottom line:  I would like to follow the magenta needle down to my Vertical Nav point just like we could do in the ERJ-145 with the Honewell FMS.

I believe the 430W VNAV function only provides advisory messages and won’t drive the GS indication or autopilot. The GNS series will do that including observing altitude constraints at intermediate waypoints, and the GFC 500 will fly the profile in VNAV vertical mode.

Skip meant to say GTN rather than GNS. What Garmin refers to as VNAV (enroute descent to start of approach) didn't come into being till GTN's. (My memory may be mistaken but I thought the function was called VCALC on the GNS' and it's output is limited to the VSR data field you can display on the navigator and only usable from current position to a single flight plan waypoint).  But with a GTN you'll get a half diamond for VNAV versus a full diamond for precision approach and advisory (+V) GP. And the ability to add altitude constraints on as many legs before FAF as you would like - plus all approach legs are pre-filled off the charted altitudes. Altitude constraints have full flexibility as well including mandatory vs min vs max.  Probably just like the ERJ. What are you waiting for?? :)

Paul, thanks for correcting my goof up.

I looked it up and the GNS 430W manual refers to the function as VNAV. I never used it because I found doing a simple mental calculation easier than pushing buttons and twisting knobs.

In the GTN series the same function is called VCALC. During configuration, the vertical navigation app can be set to either VCALC or VNAV. It is not selectable in user mode. VNAV is what gives you true vertical navigation to the PFD and GFC 500.

I believe the GTN is a cheaper upgrade compared to the ERJ :)
