lithium366 Posted February 6, 2022 Report Posted February 6, 2022 i recently pulled an interior for an inspection an coax cable replacement and noticed sheet metal edges covered with some sort of foam where they in contact with wires. Does anyone know what this is and where to buy because mine already deteriorated and compromise safety especially where they meet battery cable (my battery is in the back) Is this sort of protection still acceptable per modern standards? I didn’t see anything like this in FAA EWIS ACs Quote
carusoam Posted February 6, 2022 Report Posted February 6, 2022 There are a few anti-abrasion edge protectors that get used… Often found in circular holes… that clip in place. Most likely nylon based…. PP guesses while we wait for a good answer… -a- Quote
jaylw314 Posted February 6, 2022 Report Posted February 6, 2022 (edited) Your looking for "wire grommet" material: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/grommetedging.php?clickkey=252834 Supposedly you don't need to glue it like it is suggested in the AC 43.13-1b, but it's probably still a good idea Foam jammed under the wire probably doesn't qualify as an acceptable method Edited February 6, 2022 by jaylw314 1 Quote

No glue required 2 Quote

In a pinch, I’ve removed the cushion from an adel clamp and cut it to fit the offending sheet metal edge. RTV may work as a suitable adhesive, or Gorilla glue works pretty good (GG works on the ‘wire grommet’ material stuff, too). Quote

On tubing I’ve used fire sleeve secured with safety wire in the engine compt and outside of it I’ve used “spiral wrap”, looks like someone took a nylon tube and cut it in a spiral direction. Who knew that's what it’s actually called? https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pnpages/11-12314.php?gclid=Cj0KCQiAgP6PBhDmARIsAPWMq6l7x_bi-GCWxvFGdvV5ZFSllkP8veapZzvQMUV0wt38DFjNGeC27vQaAthIEALw_wcB I prefer whenever possible to use something that won’t burn, I’ve even seen sheet cork like what you buy to cut gaskets with used and secured with tie wraps, but I like the spiral wrap better. Having said that I have also seen engine mount tubes cut almost completely through with a tie wrap too, a little oil and dirt and that tie wrap can cut like a saw, so don’t put tie wraps on engine mount tubes.
