anAscendancy Posted December 17, 2011 Report Posted December 17, 2011 I am going to be replacing the old instrument panel and installing a more modern flat no tilt panel. Has anyone done this already and know what is involved? It seems pretty straight forward right, cut a new panel and just install it? But is there any structural add on s? Please any information on this would be very much appreciated. Quote
gregwatts Posted December 17, 2011 Report Posted December 17, 2011 I did it with a 68 C model and it came out real nice. While you have the panel all undone, you might take the time to remove old bundles of wire that have been left behind the panel. I was able to remove about 5 lbs of wire out of mine. I bought my panels from LASAR. It is labor intensive but you will be happy. Quote
takair Posted December 17, 2011 Report Posted December 17, 2011 If doing a steam guage upgrade, LASAR has a reasonably priced pre-cut panel with brackets (or they used to). It does not have an STC, but can be installed as a minor alteration or field approval. It is fairly easy and comes with instructions. I did mine MANY years ago, but I think it is worth checking with them. That is the most basic and easiest. You can do your own as well, but this one was economical at the time. There are others out there, but they get more complicated. Quote
N601RX Posted December 17, 2011 Report Posted December 17, 2011 I made the ones in my plane myself. I still have the CAD drawings. You will have to add some lighting, the factory lighting is attached to the plastic panel overlay. If the panel angle changes the artificial horizon will need to be sent off to be adjusted. I reused all the original mounting holes. Here are some pictures. http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.cfm?action=gallery&userGallery=3175 Quote
M20C Posted December 19, 2011 Report Posted December 19, 2011 I also changed my C model panel to more of a standard T layout. You have several options, but i basicaly made new brackets to mount the pilot side shock mounts to, and mounted the copilot side flat. This was done several years ago, and since then I have done panels for another C model and two J models (I started a side business making custom airplane panels to help support my "airplane habit"). I have a website at airplanepanels.com, and would be happy to talk you through doing it yourself (no you don't have to buy the panels from me; this is as much a hobby for me as a business). You will love the cleaner look it will give your airplane.. Quote
MARZ Posted December 19, 2011 Report Posted December 19, 2011 I used front panel express. The software is free - you lay it out and they will machine you a panel complete with paint filled etchings IIRC I spent less than 250 for both sides. I've got a folder in photos showing the panels. http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/ Quote
M20C Posted December 19, 2011 Report Posted December 19, 2011 Mike, That is a great price and, If you provide him with your CAD file, it will save him hours of work laying it out! Cheers, Bill Quote
1964-M20E Posted December 19, 2011 Report Posted December 19, 2011 Does anyone have a cad file with the right side panel (64 E model) they are willing to share in DXF format? I've started a drawing based on my plastic panel cover and is prety close but it is hard to get the top curve and mounting hole locations. Quote

jetdriven Posted December 19, 2011 Report Posted December 19, 2011 Wow those new panels take away the only fault of the C and E models, the shotgun panel. We ended up buying a J but the older Mooneys with the updated panels take the cake. Great job. Quote

eldeano Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 Here is a pic of the Lasar panel in my 63. Quote
MARZ Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 When I did mine I didn't try to do the curve on either side, as I intended to change the angle of the panel on the left side. Quote
