moontownMooney Posted July 3, 2021 Report Posted July 3, 2021 So... After owning our plane for three years we figure out that we apparently have an oil quick drain (surprise puddle of oil on the ground was involved). It appears to be a little leaky and contributing to the oil mess in our engine compartment (and oil "consumption" rate). Ive seen in other posts that this can be an issue. Can anyone help me identify the brand and model of quick drain this is? Any advice for stopping leaks or replacing with a better brand/model? Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted July 4, 2021 Report Posted July 4, 2021 You can replace the o-ring in that quick drain, if you can get it off. BTW, they are sometimes almost impossible to get off. get a piece of hose About 4 inches long that fits over the end of the quick drain and two hose clamps. Find a bolt that fits into the hose. Put one hose clamp around the bolt, push the hose over the tube on the quick drain and put the other hose clamp to clamp at that end. It only takes a few seconds to loosen the clamp and pull the hose off at oil change time. Or buy a new quick drain. Quote
Guest Posted July 4, 2021 Report Posted July 4, 2021 Most often they are replaced with a P5000 drain valve from Spruce. Clarence Quote
MikeOH Posted July 4, 2021 Report Posted July 4, 2021 I believe I have the P5000, so not sure if the following is applicable. My last oil change I absolutely could not get the quick drain to stop dripping despite 'snapping' it shut many times. I texted my A&P friend and he had me put the drain hose back on, then while holding the quick drain open, blow hard into the drain hose. Like magic the drain then sealed perfectly! He said that while draining a little crud can lodge on the seat and the air clears it. 3 Quote

jlunseth Posted July 4, 2021 Report Posted July 4, 2021 A leaking quick drain brought down my aircraft for an emergency landing in Canada. I have written about it a few times. It’s been a few years, but I am sure the posts are still around. The compression generated when the engine is running blows oil out the drain until there is no more to blow out. If you have an understanding of engines I am sure you can figure out what comes next, including declaring an emergency and hoping you can make a nearby airport. There are kits available to rebuild quick drains. Your A&P should be able to get one, or someone mentioned Aircraft Spruce, that is where I would go. Or replace with a new one. It is a very good idea, say at annual once a year, to pull the quick drain and let the oil drain out the big hole so any swimmers can leave and go swim somewhere else. It was a tiny piece of plastic, long but thin, too long to pass through the quick drain, that caused the problem. I still have that plastic somewhere. It is also a very good idea to rebuild the quick drain every few years, it is not very expensive. I had a shop pull the aircraft in and inspect before we departed that day because we saw an unfamiliar spot of oil on the nose tire. They said it was just the quick drain, they leak by nature, not to worry. Don’t buy that one. 2 Quote
