owner produced parts

Hi, Have any of you ever been tempted or otherwise pursued the "owner produced part".

It seems silly that good aircraft are grounded and much time is wasted chasing non responsive suppliers, salvage yards, or distributors only to find that the part is not available ,or worse, available but the price is beyond any reasonable expectation of a fair market price.

My airplane is 50 years old and needs nothing by the way ,in the way of parts. What is your experience in this area of aircraft ownership?

As long as you have the manufacturing data (material type, dimensions, etc), a blueprint, or the part itself, and contribute to the making of the part (which can be supplying such data and directions as to how the part should be made) the part can be used on your aircraft.  Of course, existing data can be used with DER approval as well if a modification or improvement is planned.

If the part is part of a minor repair or alteration then you don't need a DER, factory drawings or 337.  If the part is to be used for a major repair or alteration then you either have to talk the factory into letting you have the already approved drawing or hire a DER to develop the drawings and approved data.  Mike Bush did a very good webinar on this a couple of months ago.

Be sure you know the correct alloy and heat treat for the part you are making.
