My J has the turbo mod which complicates everything. On a stock J the starter changout should be very easy, four bolts and the starter cable. I'm not faniliar with the stock J but you may have to disassemble the air box somewhat.

Not that I've ever seen a Lycoming have this problem, but you may want to just bump the key after you install it so the bendix engages and check how the teeth mesh.

Jim, there are 4 bolts that hold the starter to the case, and two bolts in the front with a 2" long brace to the front baffling and case.  Plus starter wire cable stud. Pull and swap. You may have to unbolt the airbox from the fuel injector servo, but I dont think so.  I'd guess figure 1.5 hours labor tops.

A friend of mine just melted the armature clean out of his Kelly reman lightweight starter. The new Skytech came with a 3" square warning about not cranking more than ten seconds. They must not be kidding. That starter armature is delicate.

Does anybody prime and then turn the prop to TDC?

I watched an experienced pilot  do it in his Glassair III and it takes less than a blade to start after priming and turning the prop (so each cylinder gets a shot of fuel-air mix)?????

As long as you do the mag-off-kill check on the shutdown sequence, I see no problem with it.  A hot mag will kill you with fuel in there.  Last week a pilot turned the prop 1/4 turn on his 182 that was in the hangar for years. It started up and ran until they shut it down.  Luckily he fell backwards and it didnt get him.

I hear crow is better with hot sauce ;) We all have been where you were at one time or another. My crow came in the form of a gear switch. I kept popping the gear breaker after I got my plane and was convinced it was the gear switch. I had the IA replace it and now I have a spare. Yummy crow...
