shawnd Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 I am planning on doing a battery swap as soon as I get my hands on my airplane. I currently have Gill G-242 installed in my aircraft and from Concorde's battery replacement guide (http://concordebattery.com/main_nicads.php), seems like they are recommending the RG24-12. However, folks here seem to recommend the RG24-15: If you go by Concorde's suggestion for the M20K 24V, its the RG25-15 for the TSO one: http://concordebattery.com/aag3.php?id=2272 From comparing the two - RG24-12 is "premium" but RG24-15 is "platinum" RG24-15: http://concordebattery.com/flyer.php?id=41 RG24-12: http://concordebattery.com/flyer.php?id=133 Few questions: -15 lists 200 CCA, -12 lists none... eh? Peak power and power rating are higher in the -15 vs the -12. How much does the difference in IPP and IPR make in terms of starting up? Both the Gill and the Concorde are lead acid batteries. Although the Concorde one is sealed, is it possible to have acid free ones? G-242 does have an acid-free option. Or is the performance not worth going that route? carusoam Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 One battery, I believe, is a bit taller, has higher capacity, want to check your plane’s fit... The higher capacity weighs a bit more, as expected... make sure your WnB reflects the change... I went with a pair of high capacity batteries to match my heavier prop... the WnB change was small... If you have a pair of batteries... you probably won’t need the extra capacity... if you intend to go all electric... in the future... the extra capacity is extra fuel in the electric tank... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic.... Best regards, -a- Quote
smwash02 Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 The difference is the 15 is 13.6Ah and the 12 is 11Ah. They don't list the 12 as compatible, http://concordebattery.com/aag3.php?id=2272 I would suggest you go with the concord rg24-15. Quote
GeeBee Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 If you have any questions I can recommend Walter Heine, director of sales for Concorde. 626 813 1234 ext 243. He is a great guy. Quote
larryb Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 Bigger the better. You can never have too much battery capacity. Quote
shawnd Posted June 19, 2020 Author Report Posted June 19, 2020 When able, can someone post pictures of the changes needed to the battery cover to fit the RG24-15 in the M20K 252? Guessing this will be handy to have to show the A&P. Quote
larryb Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 In my encore there is no cover or box. Just the battery. The battery has a manifold connector for the vent hose. Quote
Jetrn Posted June 20, 2020 Report Posted June 20, 2020 the RG24-15 is the correct battery for the plane. The RG24-11m is about 2 inches higher, will fit but the battery box needs modification. The box needs to be modified for the extended tabs and the bracket attached to the battery box lid will need to be removed to accommodate the higher battery. The M battery has an adapter that attaches to the overboard vent. Quote
carusoam Posted June 20, 2020 Report Posted June 20, 2020 Somewhere along the way... Mooney went from using a battery box... to a battery frame... with a pair of threaded rods.... The battery comes with a shaped aluminum ‘Plate’ that matches the top of the battery... The top of the battery is designed as a we’ll to catch anything that bubbles out of the battery...a hose attaches to this well and drains any fumes overboard... With this frame and threaded rod set-up... no battery gets too tall... The battery is held in place between the frame at the bottom and the shaped plate at the top.... with the tightened wing nuts and safety wire... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic...
