I remember watching a documentary showing how painstakingly slow the AT-ATs were filmed in the Empire Strikes Back.  The original trilogy (4-6) is so much better than the others.

Back then they either had guys in monster suits or filmed in stop motion, which was painstaking and looked a bit fake.  Normal film has a motion blur that stop motion doesn't.  The fake worked well for machines though.

The funny thing is now most of the  animation is done through motion capture.  So once again we have guys in suits, though the suits are green screen with sensors and get digitized over.  But they're still guys in suits.
