I think basically they need an ultra-thorough inspection to make sure they fully comply with the Type Certificate as well as all the normal annual inspection items, ADs, etc.  Not impossible, but painful.

Hey guys, regarding an import to the US. Its not painful at all. Bill of sale, import inspection by an A&P submit to FAA and get your US  C of A. Its easy.  Its done every day between Canada and the US.  Transport Canada is actually more stringent on aircraft certification and standards than the FAA.  All Canadian Aircraft follow the same AD's, service bulletins etc as the US plus more.

Just do a complete PPI on any plane from Canada. A good, and otherwise very knowledgeable friend of mine got totally hosed on a 177RG he imported. Unreported gear up, major electrical issues, ongoing gear problems, an it's low time engine needed a new cam. Of course the log books were clean. May be the harsh winters, different standards, or a more casual approach to documenting service.

Sorry, but I'm not buying that inspections and certifications in Canada are any better than in the USA, given the horror stories I've heard and my friends experience.

With all do respect to your friend regarding the 177RG purchase, thats a relativly uncommon thing to have an unreported issue with a gear up, you have to report any prop strikes or incidents/accidents as you do in any other country, its whether or not the pilot followed through with that.  On that note, I have heard many horror stories of aircraft being imported from the US into Canada with hidden problems, back yard engine overhauls, and fudged documents.  I think it happens everywhere and Im not saying that canadian planes are any better but from talking to maintenance engineers with 30 years experience thats the feedback I got (of course there is bias there on their parts) , as I've now imported 2 aircraft from the US into canada, as repair/rebuild projects so I can go through them with a fine tooth comb. There is a reporting system, for incidents in canada like the FAA, google CADORS and you can search aircraft accidents/incidents back to 1994 (or earlier) I believe.

Parker,

I called on this Mooney over a month ago.  There are a two things about the plane that are driving the low price.

1)There are several instances of damage history

2)The TKS is non-FIKI.

Just thought I would let you know.

I was inquiring about a Canadian registered plane listed for sale over on (I hope this doesn't get me banded.....) Beechtalk and appears the only complication is doing a thorough title search.  Seems you have to do seperate title searches in each Province as there is no centralized database.  Several folks recommended paying a broker to do the paperwork to import it into the US, but if you know what forms to file, it is not a big deal.  I thought it would be more complicated.

Don't know if it gets any better than this!

I think these would be better:, Undecided

1997 Encore

Especially for the $5K less, although it appears this one may have had a recent prop strike.

Although this isn't a pretty, it has a better panel and and a useful load of 950#.  The broker called me the other day and said they were reducing the price another $10K, so it would be $25K less.
