PT20J Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 Nice - what fabric did you use? Skip Quote
larrynimmo Posted January 11, 2019 Author Report Posted January 11, 2019 Fabric is double knit...and the base is felt...chosen as rigid and one that will adhere with the glue... each boot took about 10 minutes to make...but I used to sew 20 years ago Quote
CaptRJM Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 In case someone is in the same situation but doesn’t have access to sewing machine Hector at Aero Comfort has these Rat Boots made out of leather. When my fabric ones were disintegrating I put them on about 10 years ago. I think he charged me $20 each. Quote
FloridaMan Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 I've heard them referred to as "rodent boots" and not dust boots, and rodents in your wings can be far more corrosive. 1 Quote

N201MKTurbo Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 They are really there to keep carbon monoxide from the exhaust from getting into the cabin through the rod opening. And for mice. Quote
Andy95W Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 Haven't we been through this before? Quote

Yetti Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 Seems like leather would be best and last longer. Do we think these spots are also fire blocks? Quote
PT20J Posted January 12, 2019 Report Posted January 12, 2019 Mooney IPC calls them out as dust boots. Originals are double-knit fabric. Don't think they'd keep much CO out. Quote
Captnmack Posted January 12, 2019 Report Posted January 12, 2019 I just ordered a complete set for my F from Lasar...a lot more than $20 ea! Quote
larrynimmo Posted January 12, 2019 Author Report Posted January 12, 2019 They will likely send you rudder pedal boots Quote
larrynimmo Posted January 20, 2019 Author Report Posted January 20, 2019 Completed installation ... first picture is with the gear fully retracted...you can see the velcro section bunched up but not interfering. The angle of the camera is abnormal because the wheel being tucked up into the wheel well makes access limited. second picture you can see the smoothly extended boot...the cloth is zip tied tight...and the felt base is glued to the fuselage with contact cement 1 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted January 20, 2019 Report Posted January 20, 2019 Nice job. I would have hit the wheel well with some Krylon first, but that's just me. Quote
larrynimmo Posted January 20, 2019 Author Report Posted January 20, 2019 Out of sight...out of mind...the exposed parts are mainly primered aluminum Quote

larrynimmo Posted January 31, 2021 Author Report Posted January 31, 2021 Beware..heavier materials seem to be a better option....but make sure you don’t bind the pushrods to the point they jam and cause damage...my feeling is light and flexible...my expectation is mine will last 20+ years Quote

I, for one, would stick with a heavier fabric that also is not especially water absorbent. Quote
EricJ Posted January 31, 2021 Report Posted January 31, 2021 The mystery boots on the aluminum frame that the IA put on just before I bought my airplane had a canvas-like cover and only lasted a few years. Quote
