Very painless.  I already had a Garmin GTX330 transponder. Took the plane down to Chandler avionics.  They removed my transponder and installed a loaner.  Shipped mine off to Garmin for the ES upgrade.  That cost me about $1500.  Came back in last week (took about 4 weeks from Garmin).  Garmin upgraded all the software, even replaced the display (for cosmetic reasons they said on the 8130).  Flew back over to CHD this afternoon.  Avionics guy spent about 2 hours running an additional wire from the 430W to the 330, upgraded the software in the 430w, did all the tests, and gave me a new transponder cert.  All in all I was out under $2k.  Glad to get it out of the way and for what I think is pretty reasonable!
