dico Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade from a Stec55 to GFC700 assuming the plane already has a G1000. I guess I am wondering if its "just" replacing that right G1000 display with a new one that has the A/P buttons and tying it into the existing servos? --- Sounds easy if you say it fast. However, I'm not sure what it entails, and I would think the cost would be crazy. But in an effort to learn about this, do you think this is possible and if so -- whats the guess as to cost. (I certainly don't think it would be remotely cost effective and you'd just but a place with a GFC AP if you wanted one -- curious though. Thanks, Dico Quote
rbharvey Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 Yes it is possible but im not sure with Mooney Factory Service shut down if a regional MSC could do it. Bring your wallet it is about $25k Bob Quote

jelswick Posted March 25, 2011 Report Posted March 25, 2011 Amen Bob! People ask if I golf, I say "No!, can't afford any other hobbies", but would gladly hock a kidney to keep at it if it ever came to that. Quote
JoeSpeed Posted March 26, 2011 Report Posted March 26, 2011 My plane is an Ovation 3 2007. It was prewired for the GFC700 but it was delivered w/ the STec since the GFC700 was not avaliable at delivery time. Mooney quoted me $65000 to upgrade the Autopilot and add Wass. It is cheaper to sell your plane and buy a GFC700 plane. Quote

vasco Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 A better option may be the Avidyne DFC 90. it is designed as a plug and play replacement for the Stec 55x. They are currently STC for only Cirrus, but i have heard others say that they are committed to moving to other airframes. The cost is around $10k. Quote

docket Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 According to the press release from Sun & Fun it looks like now the G1000 guys really need a G2000 Quote
Texasmooneypilot Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 I also own a 2007 Ovation 3 and was one of the first Ovation 3 to have the GFC700 installed. I must admit, it is a wonderful autopilot, but not that good to justify paying 65K. I have been quoted 25K just to upgrade my G1000 to WAAS and another 10K to add synthetic vision. Wonder what it will cost to upgrade to the G2000.....1 trillion dollars. Quote
