Pritch Posted July 11, 2017 Report Posted July 11, 2017 Been having problems keeping the battery charged and the amp meter has been bouncing between -15 and +25. So today I got my boss to put one mag so that I could get to the alt. (TSIO360). The brushes were shot and the shaft could be pushed pulled about an 1/8 inch, main bearing was shot and allowing oil to pass though, aw my oil leak found. After looking in the log books the pressurized mags were just over 500 hrs so I had the boss pull the other mag, so both will be rebuilt and installed after the new alt. to make my job easier. Slowly but surely this 231 is getting to be perfect plane. Pritch 2 Quote
milotron Posted July 11, 2017 Report Posted July 11, 2017 Good catch. My gear drive alternator is lower voltage at full rpm and over 500 hours so due as well. Most of the load is on the belt drive alternator anyways so not noticeable most times. How long to remove the alternator? I understand that this is a tough job requiring the motor to be tilted and disconnected from the mounts for access. Quote

Took my boss about 15 min to remove the Lt mag and about 45 min for me to remove the alt. the hardest part was getting some of the wire removed, no tilting or disconnecting required. It was a tight access and I have an intercooler on one side and standby vac on the other. It should go back on easy with both mags out of the way. Pritch 1 Quote
carusoam Posted July 11, 2017 Report Posted July 11, 2017 Great details, gents. Thanks for sharing... Best regards, -a- Quote
milotron Posted July 11, 2017 Report Posted July 11, 2017 Thanks Pritch. That work is beyond my pay grade as an owner, but also shouldn't cost me a fortune from my AME. iain Quote
