I sent mine off and paid 90% as much when it was said and done for an IRAN as I would've for a brand new set. Lesson from the school of Hard Knox I suppose. IRAN = Inspect and Repair As Necessary. Inspect and throw away as necessary, for Slicks. You guys know that CMi takes these mags for cores against a set of overhauled Bendix mags? Not only are they cheaper but they won't melt the rotor, won't burn out the cool, won't arc the points, or any of the other dozen ways a Slick mag will leave you stranded. Quote

The ignition switch to power it is better than $500 (A/C Spruce 10-357210-1), whereas without is readily available in aircraft graveyards or new for under $150 (11-03170) or via 337 for under $125 (11-03169). If your switch got replaced, you'll be forking over for one of those. You should only need one mag with an impulse coupling. In the start position only the left mag is hot. Thanks, I will find out for sure but if I understand my AP everything was still there just disconnected. I am assuming the last owner got real cheap and that is why the change. It seems if I am reading and following the log books correctly there was an AD on the oil pump that started this and that is why there are a lot of new or different parts on the engine. Everything had to come apart and I assume as it was going back together he used what he had to get it back into the air. Quote
Andy95W Posted April 8, 2017 Report Posted April 8, 2017 One safety feature about the Shower of Sparks is that a "hot" mag has almost no chance of starting the engine if you inadvertently move the prop. There are also no ADs that apply to it, unlike impulse couplings. Quote
carusoam Posted April 8, 2017 Report Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Brief history lesson... Around Y2K, there was an AD for the oil pump gears in O360s and others. The oil pump is a gear type pump. One gear is driven by the engine, the other gear is driven by the first gear by intermeshing the teeth. To make this system work well without wearing out, the two gears need to be made out of deifferent hardness materials. One was steel, the other aluminum. Unfortunately, the aluminum gear is too soft and had a tendency to wear too much over several thousand hours. the gears themselves are hiding behind the accessory cover on the back of the engine where the mags are mounted. If the mags are no longer wired properly, this would be an indication of a maintenance induced problem. The area behind the engine is tight compared to other planes and some mechanics don't want to belong back there? Find a mechanic that wants to be there. It is also possible to check the wiring yourself to see everything is connected properly. Take and post photos. Somebody will know... PP thoughts only. My C got new pump gears and new aerleron control bits with gussets in its first year or two of ownership. Best regards, -a- Edited April 8, 2017 by carusoam Quote
