George Posted December 7, 2016 Report Posted December 7, 2016 Changed L main tire and tube yesterday...I guess I ordered with the wrong tube (06-01229 valve TR-67A angle 90) the valve stem is longer than the one I replaced and I can not install the wheel cover as the stem is about half inch too long. Any issues with leaving the wheel cover off with longer stem? What tube/stem should I be looking for on the next main tube/tire change? Thanks GHW Quote
rbridges Posted December 8, 2016 Report Posted December 8, 2016 I have straight stems on my mains. It bends the stem against the hub. You would think the bent stem would be correct. Not sure if the length matters if you leave the covers off. Quote
carusoam Posted December 8, 2016 Report Posted December 8, 2016 My stems end in a hole in the cover. Not long enough to come out. Not short enough to hide behind the cover... Best regards, -a- Quote

carusoam Posted December 8, 2016 Report Posted December 8, 2016 The cap on the tube appears to be filling up the hole. But, if there is a plug that belongs there, that may make sense... Thanks, Don. Best regards, -a- Quote
George Posted December 8, 2016 Author Report Posted December 8, 2016 I am kinda leaning towards leaving the wheel covers off as it is easier to service the air. We also performed a gear swing and there is more than enough room in the wheel well for the extra 1/2 inch stem length. GHW Quote
Yetti Posted December 8, 2016 Report Posted December 8, 2016 I have not had the dust covers on for a year. But I am a fair weather flyer on paved strips. Quote

I know it's not pretty, but I thought about putting holes in my covers and going with angled tubes next time. Quote
DonMuncy Posted December 8, 2016 Report Posted December 8, 2016 It depends a lot on what kind of covers you have. My hangar elf built mine and put holes in the appropriate spots, which are covered by hole plugs. Take a look at my gallery photos. I use the covers because I like the way they look. I flip the plugs out and screw on an extension to check pressure and add air. Quote

I'll take care of the other items that need tending and maybe work on holes in the covers later... Quote
cliffy Posted December 10, 2016 Report Posted December 10, 2016 Tubes come with 3 different valves. There is a short straight, a long straight and a 90 degree valve. The long stem ones bend on the axle hub and over time (1 or 2 yrs) will cause cracking on the stretched side of the stem and failure with air loss. Been there, done that more than once. The short straight stems will work great on our Mooneys IF YOU COULD FIND THEM! I don't think anyone makes them anymore. The 90 degree vale stem works and doesn't seem to cause the issues that the long stem ones do. If you have long stems and they are bent on the hub take a real good look and check for cracking on the stem, way down deep in the hole. Once its cracked its going to leak eventually. Quote
