FloridaMan Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 I just thought I'd mention this. I was thinking about how good the paint looks on my Mooney; it looks like it's brand new. I just went and found the logbook entry and I saw that it was painted in 1994 using Imron paint. I don't have any recent pictures on me, but it still looks exactly like it did when I bought it in 2012. 1 Quote
bonal Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 First off you have a great looking F. I used to shoot Imron back in the day always loved the result you got a shine that rivals lacquer without all the post shoot sanding. Haven't done any paint in years don't even know if you can still purchase it. Quote
bradp Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 @Antaresyou're making my day. I just dropped off the plane about an hour ago for it's exterior work, new windhshield and paint. It's going to get Imron, same scheme as before, with blue and silver stripes. Nice to know it's going to last. BTW - I visited the factory at LP aero to pick up a new windshield there. Nice folks. Good outfit. Many random transparencies scattered about. -Brad Quote
bonal Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 Good luck with the paint Brad I guess that means it's still being produced I always liked shooting it made a shade tree mech like me look like a pro Quote
NotarPilot Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 Is aircraft paint different that automobile paint? There's a white pearl Toyota and Lexus have that I would love to use on my plane. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 I would avoid any paint system that requires a clear coat. Clear coats seem to be the first thing to fail and you can't fix it. If it is a solid color, you can always rub it out. 1 Quote

But I really want to do a base metallic pearl. I keep my plane hangared so maybe it could last? Quote
rainman Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 I just got my cracking cowl repaired and some paint touch ups done this week. The painter was able to buff most of the plane to like-new condition except the areas which had metallic flake and no clear coat. My recommendation would be to stay with solid colors. My paint job had been Imron. Quote
