1964-M20E Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 Just playing around but this is what our beloved Mooney might look like as a tail drager. 2 Quote
MB65E Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 Haha, it wouldn't need the step anymore. I'm sure it would work. Even closer to the P51. The tail wheel would need to be forward a bit. It would be lighter w/o all the steel in the nose. Fun, -Matt Quote
aviatoreb Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 Better ground clearance too for rough terrain. Ok - somebody make an STC. Quote
kmyfm20s Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 With my tall dash, high nose up attitude and as close as the tail of my long body is to the ground. It kinda already is a tail dragger! 1 Quote
aviatoreb Posted December 9, 2015 Report Posted December 9, 2015 I read once there is an STC for a tail dragger conversion for the Grumman Yankee - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqr_o4vuHTs Quote
Marauder Posted December 9, 2015 Report Posted December 9, 2015 Already been done. It's called a Swift. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote

Hector Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Not sure the all moving tail design of a Mooney lends itself well for a tail wheel. Might have to sharpen the pencil to see how landing loads would affect the tail attach structure. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

It would have to attached in front of the movable tail. Like I said I'm just playing but there is a J model with the rocket conversion that is disassembled would make a good candidate. I wonder if this would be enough of a modification to firmly put the resulting plane in the experimental category without the limited testing restrictions. Maybe an all composite fuselage and a second door. Yes I do like the Swift it is a pretty plane. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 When I lived in CO (01V) there was a guy who put a 250 HP engine in his Swift. He took me up one day and we did some aerobatics. That thing would go straight up for over two thousand feet. Kind of like a 250 HP retractable Cessna 150. Quote
carusoam Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 I don't know much... The landing gear of the tail dragger vs. nose dragger moved from... behind the center of lift (nose wheel) -to- forward of the center of lift (tail wheel) something to consider in your re-design ideas... Seems to be an important CG issue during the transition from flight to ground bound vehicle. Best regards, -a- Quote
