carusoam Posted December 3, 2015 Report Posted December 3, 2015 KP, Consider the ferry flight as good usable part of the transition training. A day of pattern work and local flights, E-procedures and a day of XCountry flying and IFR procedures is a pretty good way of a capturing all the small details you want to have touched regarding the care and feeding of a Mooney. Why would the insurance company require an hour? They usually ask for more training when it's not needed. Transition training is a good idea when moving between Mooney models for most people. Does the new2U M20F come with a panel full or empty of nav radios and AP? It would be interesting to hear what you find surprising or different than expected, about your return back into GA (general aviation) and transitioning to the F. Best regards, -a- Quote

kpaul Posted December 3, 2015 Report Posted December 3, 2015 According to the insurance it is because I have 5000 hours in complex aircraft, however I have zero in type, so I think it is not nearly enough to ever feel remotely comfortable. The soon to be new2me M20F is currently owned by Jax88 another MSer. I found it listed in the "for sale section" of this forum. It has a GTN 650 w/ Century 41 Autopilot +GPSS. I have about 1700 hours of GNS 430W experience so I am interested to see how if at all that translates to the 650. 1 Quote
gsxrpilot Posted December 3, 2015 Report Posted December 3, 2015 Just a note on the Maxwell pre-buy. If Don did a very recent annual of the plane, I would see about an abbreviated pre-buy from him. There's no need to pull all the inspection panels looking for corrosion and other things that are very time consuming on a pre-buy. Also, he doesn't need to do the full review of the log books for AD's, and other issues. Don keeps meticulous notes on the planes that come through his shop and I would trust a quick once over by Don looking for any obvious signs of damage since the annual. Anyway, hope it all works out and you enjoy the plane as much as I've enjoyed the one Don checked out for me a couple of years ago. Quote

Yes, I just got a email from Don and he said he would be willing to do a prebuy or discuss the aircraft over the phone for free. Having never worked with him, I'm impressed, that is a pretty stand up way to run a business, since he could have had me pay for the prebuy. Quote

He knows a CFI on the field that is familiar with Mooneys, I believe his name was Jason but not sure. I'm sure Don can fix you up with anything Mooney, ask him for help. Quote
Pictreed Posted December 13, 2015 Author Report Posted December 13, 2015 Guys, derail this thread all you want, it's all good info. I spent the last 2 weekends taking apart the E that I'm looking at with a local that is Mooney knowledgeable, and owns the same plane, and has done all the annuals since Don looked at it in 2008 so I am not taking it back to him. I was luck enough to find a beautiful 1965 20E in great shape. As we went over the plane he explained to me about maintenance procedures typical to this aircraft, all the AD's, and I even got to use the Johnson bar while it was jacked up. I got to personally inspect everything with him. An awesome treat which probably saved me tons of hours researching how to take care of it. After seeing all the things to look for I would definitely suggest doing a pre buy. You also have to be careful of the 'my buddy does my annuals' as letting the buddy do the pre buy. Unless you know the parties are not biased, I would get a third party inspection. I also found a hanger today so after the holidays I should be able to start the purchase process. I'll post some pics when everything is done. I guess you know because my avatar will change too. Tim Quote
