A heavy person stepping on the flaps can cause an out of lateral balance (left roll) by bending the flap. For unfamiliar passengers is a good idea to lower the flaps before stepping on.

Four Spanish placards? I'm guessing you had someone step on your flaps?

If they were hydraulic, they would just articulate down under weight. I push mine down by hand at every preflight.  I try to remember to put them down for pax as on more than one occasion someone has gone ass over tea kettle. Like stepping on a trap door.
