Portland, OR airport/hangar recommendation?

Hello - 

My wife and I are moving to Portland, OR in September and I'm looking for a new home base.  There seem to be quite a few options from Hillsboro and Troutdale to Aurora State and Twin Oaks (although that looks a bit short for comfort).

 

Can anyone suggest a good place to start looking for a new hangar?  I have an M20F, so just need a small T-Hangar at  a decent price.

Rags- I'm down in K-Falls, but I fly up that way in the mooney often. I most often frequent Troutdale- easy to get in and out of- good runway and a great location if you're coming from the east (can avoid the traffic). I hear nothing but good things about aurora and Hillsboro, too, though.

Are you familiar with the Cascadia Subduction Zone?

 

Is anyone out in the Washington state area aware of this fault?

I have landed at twin oaks. You have to bring your A game. They have cut down the trees at the end of the runway, so it should be easier then when I landed there. When I pulled up to the fuel pump a guy came over and said "we don't see very many Mooneys here".

1 for KTTD. Controllers are very friendly, and the airport has a small group feel. Even with both schools staying busy. And you have an MSC there as well.

The only minus I can think of about Troutdale is the weather.  Being on the river it sometimes takes a bit longer for the clouds to lift and if I remember right the winds sometimes blow pretty hard down the river from the gorge.  Maybe somebody that lives there can comment more on that.  The only approach is a circling approach with minimums of 1000'.

 

If where you put it doesn't matter, Aurora has straight in approaches to both ends with minimums as low as 300'.  They are still building the control tower but it should be open soon and become a class D.  Pacific Coast Avionics is located on the field and has pretty good prices on avionics.  I believe the weather should be a bit better than TTD but can't say for sure.

 

Fuel prices seem to be better at either Troutdale or Aurora than at Hillsburo.

It seems that the biggest threat from the Cascadia Subduction Zone would be an eruption of Mt Hood. With that in Mind I would keep the plane out in the valley where you could fly it away after the big one. Troutdale will be the first to go...

What part of Portland are you going to be living in?  Distance to airport seems to me to be a pretty big factor as to where to base the plane.

 

Depending on where you will be working you always have to consider the tax situation.  Living in Oregon - income tax but no sales tax.  Living across the river in Washington - sales tax but no income tax.  Many people drive over to Oregon to buy their big ticket items.  They are supposed to report those to Washington and pay sales tax but you would probably have a hard time finding two people that do.

 

There are a couple airports on the WA side too but when you register the plane you will most likely have to pay a 6.5% 'Use' tax.  Not sure how they work it in Oregon.
