gsengle Posted August 28, 2015 Author Report Posted August 28, 2015 Installed! But only made quick hop from KISP to KHVN, so PIREP in coming days... Here are photos... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 3 Quote
StevenL757 Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 Greg - lovin' it!!! Â Chalk up another quality install to Tres, Rick, and crew, it appears. Â Definitely send some other pics when you have it powered up, and let me know how you like seeing traffic 35 miles out now, instead of 11-12. Â :-) Â I intended to be out there this afternoon but got tied up with work. Â Will be there tomorrow and flying who-knows-where, so may catch you in passing. 1 Quote
carqwik Posted September 1, 2015 Report Posted September 1, 2015 Any thoughts on why you moved it to the right radio stack instead of on the left? In contemplating the same install, I was thinking of moving my KX155 to the right and putting the NGT in its place. So pireps on the installation location would be useful too. Thanks! Marauder Posted September 1, 2015 Report Posted September 1, 2015 Insufficient space and I didn't want to split the comm radios up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Ok, now that you posted a picture (thanks!) you have opened yourself up for a barrage of questions. Are the scale of the two sides of the display able to be zoomed in and out separately? Also, I see the traffic on the 530, which I suspect is traffic from FIS-B. It appears that the L3 is not corrected for heading. Is that correct? I see the 1600 and 900 foot targets on both units, but they are in different positions. Also, there is a little line in front of your aircraft on the display, is that like Garmin's Target Trend feature? Sorry for the questions, but since most of us didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, we are going to rely on you! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
gsengle Posted September 1, 2015 Author Report Posted September 1, 2015 Sharp eye, yes there is a heading issue which will be fixed this week... But makes clear the crazy amount GA of traffic we can have in New England... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
gsengle Posted September 1, 2015 Author Report Posted September 1, 2015 All traffic shows up on the 530, but doesn't have the new adsb symbology for that traffic so you can only tell the difference on the Lynx Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Marauder Posted September 1, 2015 Report Posted September 1, 2015 Sharp eye, yes there is a heading issue which will be fixed this week... But makes clear the crazy amount GA of traffic we can have in New England... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk It is scary to see how much traffic you don't see. I flew with a student pilot on Sunday helping him learn navigation techniques and picked up two planes with my GDL-39 showing full FIS-B due to me being in parasite mode. They were hard to see initially because of the haze but I would never had even looked for them unless they triggered on Garmin Pilot. Both flew overhead at less than 800' and descending. The L3 is a viable contender for my ADS-B solution if the GDL-88 doesn't get programmed to work with my Aspens. I know the L3 will display on them and with a separate display, can be dedicated to a separate display for FIS-B or TIS-B. Thanks for the additional information. mike_elliott Posted September 1, 2015 Report Posted September 1, 2015 I hope to have mine in by the Mooney Summit. It's my schedule that's the hangup, not my avionics 'shop. I plan to place it in the center stack and move possibly the kx165 if needed. Quote
gsengle Posted September 2, 2015 Author Report Posted September 2, 2015 Going from my old skywatch system to full ADS-B traffic, the biggest improvement is the track indicator. Knowing which direction someone is going sure improves your situational awareness and lowers the anxiety with most targets... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Tony Armour Posted September 2, 2015 Report Posted September 2, 2015 There is also an iPad app for the Lynx that works pretty well. You can see how it works. Quote
PMcClure Posted September 2, 2015 Report Posted September 2, 2015 So if I am happy with current XM weather and on board traffic and just want to meet the ADS B out, what do you all think of the lower model L3 transponders (NGT-2000 UAT, or 1000). I could save some $$ but give up some added features on the 9000. The Garmin GTX-330ES is also about $5000 installed, I think. Quote

I like the ability of the GDL-88 to run in anonymous mode. For us scud runners (flying below 18,000') a non ES version, (especially if the conspiracists are correct about the ES being the basis for future user fees) would be preferred. gsengle Posted September 3, 2015 Author Report Posted September 3, 2015 The adsb traffic is much more accurate and the track indicator is very useful, and you will never pay for weather again if you ditch the xm... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

mike_elliott Posted September 21, 2015 Report Posted September 21, 2015 Scheduled to get the L3 tomorrow. Hopefully, all will play nice with the IPAD, Aspen, GN$430w. Should take about a day for the install, and Ill have it at the Mooney Summit III if anyone wants to see it Fri, Oct 2nd. Gsengle, do you get audible traffic warnings with your setup? 2 Quote
gsengle Posted September 21, 2015 Author Report Posted September 21, 2015 Yes re: audible warnings... I have the 9000+. The only install gotcha was not being able to use the heading source coming off the storms cope and into the 530, because then the arinc signal back into the 530 would trump the rs232 data and leave us in a loop meaning that the Lynx has to use in my case it's GPS track as a proxy for heading even though traffic is corrected correctly on the 530 screen... mike_elliott Posted September 21, 2015 Report Posted September 21, 2015 Assuming that quickly typed response makes any sense   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I think so, I sent it on to my Avionics guy for him to digest. I am just getting the 9000, so I see I wont have to put up with B*tch*n B3tty in the pattern. I so have a stormscope display on a 430W, and will have wx,traffic and storm displayed on the Aspen in addition to the IPAD. Quote
mike_elliott Posted September 25, 2015 Report Posted September 25, 2015 (edited) Got the NG9000 installed yesterday, with one caveat, we still have to get traffic to display on the Aspen. Aspen requires an unlock key to display traffic, weather and lightning on their PFD's, which we have. Weather from the Lynx is not available in this firmware release on the Aspen, but will be shortly per the Aspen folks. The traffic being unavailable on the Aspen is a setting issue we need to resolve still. Non the less, the Lynx is a thing of beauty. It offers up wx, traffic on the GNS430w, multiple IPADs, and will on the Aspen. It is software upgradeable to the NG9000+ featuring active traffic but will require an antenna to be installed If I go this route later. The scalability of the unit will prove to be a prudent investment in future proofing against the ever changing winds of regulation. Garmin, nor does anyone else, have a single box that will do all this. Add in the possibility of it being upgradeable to provide what garmin flightstream does via a firmware update really sweetens it's consideration. Edited September 25, 2015 by mike_elliott 3 Quote
Tony Armour Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 Any pictures Mike ? I'm leaning that way but with active traffic. From the pics above, no heading info on the 530......I believe that is the way it will also display on my 540. Is that the way the 430 displays ? Not a deal breaker and I think it will eventually display correctly. Quote

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Not sure I understand. Do you have a WX-1000 storm scope or something else ? Why would the 530 need a heading source from a stormscope ? After looking at the manual for the WX-1000, I think I have the heading stabilization option as well as the navaid option. I think the navaid option recieves it's data from my KLN- whatever GPS. It's possible I might remove the KLN and then the WX-1000 would need route/navaid input from the 540. What are your thoughts on the 9000 now ? Also regarding not having traffic heading on your 530 ? Sight picture to the right stack ? Here is what I have to work with: Quote
