I am looking into redoing the panel on my M20E soon and want to go with the EI CGR-30p for STC'd monitoring of a lot of gauges.  2 gauges I wasn't planning on it STC-replacing are the vacuum and ammeter, but it will still monitor these gauges.  Neither the vacuum gauge nor ammeter are required by FAA for VFR or IFR flight and they are also not on the Type Certificate Datasheet.

Does this mean they are not required?  If that's the case, can I just monitor them with a gauge that's not STC'd as a primary (ie page 2 of the CGR-30p)?  Or could I have them tied into something like this http://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/av/annunciator/aeag6.php  which has no STC?

If it is required for me to have monitoring of these then what is required of the instruments and/or paperwork that monitor them?

Thanks!  There will be many more questions in the future.  If anyone here has redone vintage Mooney panels in San Diego, please let me know!

There are more sources for requirements than the ones in Part 91 and the TCDS. There's also the applicable certification rules themselves and equipment required by the manufacturer (see FAR 91.213(d)).

So, for example, Part 23 (which applies to current manufacture) requires "For normal, utility, and acrobatic category airplanes with direct current systems, an ammeter..."

(I haven't looked to see if the E is a FAR Part 23 or an old CAR Part 5 certification)

The following are cut/pasted from the old CAR.  I'd be surprised if an ammeter was not required.  Everything used to have an ammeter.

§ 3.669

Suction gauge.

A suction gauge shall be provided and so installed as to indicate readily to the flight crew while in flight the

suction in inches of mercury which is being applied to the air-driven types of gyroscopic instruments.  This gauge shall be connected to

the instruments by a suitable system.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT

§ 3.681

A.  Electrical systems in airplanes shall be free from hazards in themselves, in their method of operation, and in their effects on other parts of the airplane.

Electrical equipment shall be of a type and design adequate for the use intended.  Electrical systems shall be installed in such a manner that they are

suitably protected from fuel, oil, water, other detrimental substances, and mechanical damage.

B. Items of electrical equipment required for a specific type of operation are listed in other pertinent parts of the Civil Air Regulations.

The POH may have things listed that are required by 4 categories...

VFR day, VFR night, IFR day, IFR night...

In the modern POH, this is a chart with check marks at the end of the line items...

In the Owners Manual for my C, these are described in several pages of text.

Our vintage planes are CAR 3.
