Hi Mooniacs,

I have recently purchased a M20J 1977 model. When I went to fetch the aircraft from the AMO and he pointed out that my strobe light on the wings are missing the electric module (not sure of the correct name) that operates the lights is missing. He mentioned that only the wires are in place.

Does any one know what this unit is called and where I can purchase a new one.

Regards

Andy

It's called a strobe power supply or power pack. If it's Whelen, you can buy one new, or maybe on eBay, but older Mooneys used Hoskins and they are out of business, though parts may still be available, eBay?

If buying used, be aware these supplies have large electrolytic capacitors and the "insulation" inside can break down over time if the capacitors are not charged (power supply powered up) occasionally. There is a way to sometimes rejuvenate the capacitors, using a variable DC power supply to ramp up the voltage slowly that sometimes works.

Other options: Replace your individual strobe supply with a centrally located power supply - requires running new wiring from supply to strobes, but results in synced strobes and multiple flash strobes (Whelen Comet Flash etc). Probably not a great option due to labor cost running new wiring. I did this years ago on my Mooney.

Replace power supplies and strobe tubes with LED strobes. Expensive, nice, did this on my Husky.

Who would be able to supply a replacement kit, even if it means replacing the whole system.

What kind of wing tips do you have?

Do a search on Whelen Orion LED series, there is several styles depending on what tips you have.

I have this entire set available if would work for you. They go in the clear enclosure in sculpted wingtips.
