Mooney has a drawing/ retrofit kit that allows it. LP aero also has it listed as a PMA approved replacement part for the older mooneys that came with a 2 PC window.

Go with the SC Gray, you will be glad you did. Clear just makes it too bright and hot. SC Gray is good in daylight and not too dark for night.

The SC Gray will also reduce sun damage to your interior. You will want to change the side windows out someday so you might as well start the process by doing the windshield in the correct tint now.

I did the 1/4" SC gray from Great Lakes Aero in my 201. It was a hassle fitting it but I do think it's slightly quieter but the real payoff is the clarity and the heat control. It's difficult to quantify but the improvement is real. The side windows are still green and it doesn't exactly match but I'll go gray with the others later.

Wow that plane looks like crap

Get a coat of paint on her and she will look like a totally different plane. I like the look of the wrong root fairings. Are they expensive?

Don't forget mine Chris! Shame on you for posting a picture of me and not showing my plane a005cb0d3b3d7c863a950b8145f1d582.jpg

Okay okay we're triplets!

BTW - why does the hangar look all yellow? Were you experiencing a solar flare or just using your Cheap Bast$&d camera?

That was way back before the hangar was painted and the lights were changed, and yes, my old cheap phone too.

Check your POH, but I think that the OAT gauge is required equipment. You could get a digital one and mount it elsewhere, or you could reuse the old one and put it in the new windshield.

Thanks, just looked it up on their site! $485 for the 1/8th Smoke Grey $585 for the 1/4 Smoke Grey... Maybe next annual!

If you have a JPI...

Consider using it for OAT with an additional T/C...

Often mounted in an air scoop on the side of the fuselage.

Modern Mooney's put it out on the wing in the shade...

As for that windshield...it's not clear or gray...

Sort of looks coke bottle green to me...

So hard to tell, isn't it?

Won't put it in the windshield, see the crack? This old Mooney doesn't have a normal poh with a w&b section with the required or optional listing. Don't have an engine analyzer either.

I found the type certificate data sheet here.

If you look at the M20C the only required instruments are those for CAR3 and the ones listed.  But the listed items are basic and include the nose wheel, prop, hub, POH, voltage regulator etc.  No mention in the entire document of an outside air temperature sensor.  So based on this I don't need one.  Of course I'd like to replace it but I could legally fly without it.

Davtron makes a digital OAT/ clock combo unit and it's only around $500. Personally, I would never fly without a OAT gauge, but I live in a colder climate and routinely fly up high so icing is a concern for me. I can see why you wouldn't want to drill a hole in a brand new windshield for sure. Might be a good opportunity to get an engine analyzer. JPI has some pretty good rebates right now.

Most mechanics and the FAA would consider it minor. I just installed that very same unit in a customers 172 that I replaced the windshield on, all that was required was a logbook entry and a updated weight and balance.

Davtron has info on their site that it's a minor alteration but I didn't need that to convince me. It's minor according to FAR part 1. I installed a Davtron M803 I got on eBay for 120$

The air temp probe goes in an inspection panel under the right wing. Out of the arc of the prop.

The 655 is also a good choice. It displays temp, pressure altitude, density altitude and voltage. If your considering a new engine, then an engine monitor with oat would be a good choice.

Fyi there is a Mooney expert A&P in my area who said that he will do my one piece install for 900 even. He said a 201 windshield would cost 2000 for labor.

That's one heck of a deal... I'd jump all over that.
