rockydoc Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 I've checked Luagardia and Teterborough. Both prices and landing fees took my breath away. Does anyone know of an inexpensive airport to prk at for a month that is near Manhattan? Thanks. Quote
MooneyBob Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 Try LINDEN - KLDJ. Then taxi or train to the NYC Quote

carusoam Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 I would think that a search for New York City may result in a string of posts... Expect that Cheap and near NYC may not turn up very much in a single search....? What else are you looking for? Rental car or public transportation etc... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
John Pleisse Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 Simple answer: nowhere. Linden is OK, but you need to have your head on a swivel.....I don't mess with anything up there anymore. I go to Morristown, NJ. Great services, good security, lots of approaches, south end of the airspace. I rent a car, they bring it to the tie down. Good luck getting a cab at Linden.Take the 24 to the 78 and you are through the Holland Tunnel and in Tribeca within 24 mins. Eazy-peezy. Quote
MooneyBob Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 I am based at KBLM. Nice 7400' strip. It is about 1 hour ride to NYC though. Quote
Seth Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 The last few trips I've flown into FRG - Farmingdale/Republic and then jumped on the Long Island railroad (quick taxi to the the station). They have a good airport and the prices though high, are not Teterboro, JFK, etc . . . I had landed at Linden once, but it was just . . . odd. -Seth Quote
flyboy0681 Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 You didn't actually think that LaGuardia would welcome you, did you? Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 The last time I went I parked at White Plains. It was a 5 min cab ride and a 30 min train to GCS. The parking rates were quite reasonable. Quote
Oscar Avalle Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 Check Essex County airport (KCDW). I was based there for a while and it was not too bad. Quote
201er Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 Bring a lock and several yards of chain if you're coming to Linden 1 Quote
PTK Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 I've checked Luagardia and Teterborough. Both prices and landing fees took my breath away. Does anyone know of an inexpensive airport to prk at for a month that is near Manhattan? Thanks. What prices and fees exactly took your breath away at TEB? I was up there not too long ago at Meridian. It was $50 per night which was waived with a 15 gal fuel purchase. And every 15 gal fuel purchase gets you another night. The landing fee is $17. Fuel is $7.29 per gallon. Say hypothetically you stay 2 nights and buy 30 gallons at a delta of even $2 per gallon you park there for under $80 fuel included! I think this is more than reasonable for being 10 miles from Manhattan! 1 Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 Except he wants to park for a month... $50/night x 30 is a bit much. We went to White Plains last summer and it was very good IMO. Reasonable prices, and a free shuttle to and from the train into the city. Not convenient if you want the plane to be close so you can hop over to the plane quickly for a pleasure flight, but it worked well for us. Quote
Deb Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 We have stayed at KHPN and KFRG. KHPN at Panorama (now Landmark) was $25/night, one night waived with fuel purchase. Before becoming Landmark, they were very GA friendly. They will drive you to the train (Metro North) and it's about 35mins, and costs $8.50 - $11.25, or arrange a car service or car rental. There may or may may not be a $2.50 landing fee collected by the state. We've never been charged, but we know a Bonanza that always gets charged. If it's IMC, expect BWY SAX BREEZY coming from the south; we've gotten a STAR coming from KROC, but they gave us the route rather than telling us to pick up the STAR from an intersection. If it's VFR and approaching from the south, we go up the Hudson River at 1500 - 2000 ft with flight following. It's much faster and very scenic. Going to KFRG, we stay at Sheltair. You'll have to call them for tie down fees, but it's probably less than KHPN. It's about 50 mins to Penn Station, and about $10 - $13 (LIRR); 5 mins to the train station, and they'll take you. Car service is probably more expensive than from HPN and more time consuming. There is a $2.50 landing fee; we get billed by mail about 1/2 the time. Coming from the south VFR, ask for clearance through Bravo airspace early on, and expect JFK at around 3000 ft. Alterntively, expect to go below 1500 ft over water, or detoured around to the east. On an IFR departure, we have been given Farmingdale Four, WAVEY at 3000 ft which is over water. If you're not comfortable with that, it's usually negotiable. Have a great trip! Quote
Deb Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 Ah, it's for a month. Ask both FBOs for a monthly rate; it'll probably be less. I know the managers at both FBOs. Quote

201er Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 Do you have to come and go or just park once for the month? If you are parking once, you may save a lot of money by tying down further away like central jersey or old bridge. Quote
FloridaMan Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 The folks at Sheltair at Republic (KFRG) really took care of me when I was up there. My airplane ate a spinner bulkhead and I got stuck. There's a train station right by the airport that'll take you into the city and a Mooney Service Center on the field. I think it was around $10/day, but don't quote me on it and I would imagine that it'd be cheaper if you were staying longer. Quote
Robert C. Posted March 7, 2014 Report Posted March 7, 2014 You may want to look into Danbury, CT KDXR. It's the starting point of a train line to Manhattan, so probably a solid hour on the train plus cab ride to the airport. No issue if you're staying in Manhattan the whole time, but if you want to go and out it may be a bit far. I fly out of there, our flying club is parked at Reliant Air. Reliant looks after at least 2 or 3 Mooneys so if you need something done they will at least know the tail is really on the right way Avgas price for Feb was $5.65. Great service and friendly people. Am sure that they'll be glad to chat with you about price to park for a month and transportation. Enjoy the big apple! Robert Quote
bradp Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I would also recommend BDR it's close to the metro north new haven line and then you're looking at about a 1:15 ride to mid town. BDR (three wings) have always been good to me, as has volo, the other FBO. Avgas is reasonably priced. Only downside is a municipal landing fee. Quote
marks Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 My son lives in Hoboken NJ and works in Manhattan and KCDW (Caldwell NJ) has got to be the best solution with reasonable fuel etc. There are several taxi companies that can get you to the Path (subway) to Manhatten for about $80. Make sure when calling around you say that you want to go to the Essex County Airport in Fairfield New Jersey. While the town is Caldwell the offices are across the town line (very close) in Fairfield. It takes about 40 minutes to get to the Path. I live on Martha's Vineyard and have made the trip many times. As a practical matter KCDW is best. Quote
