dfgreene61 Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Hello Folks: I'm not sure if this has been covered here or not, but I thought I'd offer this tip since I've benefitted so much by being a member here for a short time. Using your iPhone you can have Siri read your checklists to you, if you have your phone wired into your headset. 1) Using the Note app, create a note for each checklist phase, for example: Landing Gear Down Flaps Full Prop High Speed Over Fence Seventy One Knots 2) Then to have her speak your check list, invoke siri and say: "Read Note Landing" When you enter your note you need to use complete words she can understand, no jargon or abbreviations. 3 Quote
BigTex Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Not to steal your thread but I'm actually developing an app that does audible alerts for gear, GUMP checks and v speeds that is wired end up similar to what your doing with Siri. It's currently only available for Android devices mainly because it uses the Barometer sensors that's not available on iOS. We'll be porting it to iOS if there's any interest. It still needs some work but if anyone has any interest in helping to alpha test it, PM me. Quote
fluffysheap Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 I would be interested, but none of my Android devices have a barometer. I use Avilution and while it's a great chart/AFD replacement, it's crummy for checklists. I am still using laminated paper. Quote

If they don't, it defaults to using the GPS. Not as good but for gear/GUMP check alerts, close enough. Quote
Bob_Belville Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Gary, I'd be happy to help test that app on my android phone. Quote
BigTex Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Thanks Bob... Anyone else interested, just PM me your gmail email and I'll get you set for access and the link in Google Play. Quote

Cabanaboy Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Pretty cool, i emailed to my phone an edited version of Checklist item so that's quick input into notes. Wonder if there a way to get Siri to pause after an item? she reads them pretty fast... Quote
BigTex Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Do you guys think there's a market for an electronic checklist that calls out items from your checklist? If there's a large enough interst, we can create an app that does this. I just thought most folks perfer to use paper. Quote
drapo Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Speed Over Fence Seventy One Knots. Nice! My Siri will read numbers, 71 knots works. Quote

I always wonder how many people use the electronic checklists in their G1000s and other systems that have them available. Or how may pilots actually use one if they bought it for their phone or tablet. All the ones I've played with, even those that allow me to customize them, have been pretty bad at getting through a checklist as efficiently as a flow backed up by a "written" one (in my case the "written" one is a pdf filed on my tablet). Big Tex, may be a good idea, especially if the pilot can set each item easily thru cut and paste from email or text to notes, add a user defined time delay after each item (maybe a standard time delay all items; and a custom user defined delay for items that take longer to complete.) That'd be pretty cool, keeping eyes up and not having look down at check list. Quote
Matt Michael Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Unless an automated checklist can know when each item has been IDENTIFIED, LOCATED, and OPERATED by the pilot BEFORE proceeding to the next item I think it will detract from safety of flight rather than contribute. Quote
AmigOne Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I love technology but I have never been a fan of electronic checklists for a handful of items. A professionally made placard for the critical items in front of your eyes or a laminated sheet should do. If you don't bother with either one why will you use an electronic one? Quote
DonMuncy Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 My laminated card checklist stays on my glare shield. It is so easy to use I don't see any reason to have an automated one. I add to and/or revise mine every few years. Quote
AmigOne Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Here is my checklist, always there and if I don't use it then I have other problems I should be working on. Emergency procedures should be memorized since they are not that many but also be available in a laminated sheet. Quote
Matt Michael Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 An interactive text or audio checklist that prompts you and requires input to verify completion of each item before moving on could be a very good thing. I would be surprised if this isn't already in use somewhere. If there is a version available to general aviation pilots like us I would like to know about it. Quote
Marauder Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Fltpln's app now has a verbal checklist feature. Sent using Tapatalk Quote

Interactive text checklists have existed for a while. If you fly with a 430/530, for example, you have one. I'm audio versions exist also. Good thing? Maybe. Maybe not. I've had friends who ran through them like a paper one but I'm not sure how you overall avoid it being a "do"" list where you read and do each item in sequence rather than a a briefing or flow-confirmation "did" list. I'm not sure I want to be behind the guy doing the 5-minute run-up. Quote

Marauder Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 Fltplan.com doesn't appear to have a verbal checklist for Android. That's a shame. It is also why I gave up on Androids for aviation tools. Garmin Pilot ran on it but was version behind the iPad version and it wouldn't run ForeFlight. I loved my Nexus 7, but the aviation developers seem to favor the iOS version. Quote
carusoam Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 I use Siri more often than I expect too. She just typed the above sentence.... I'm more of a flow and check list guy now. If Siri can make the system smoother or more reliable, I'm interested in trying it out. Best regards, -a- Quote
AmigOne Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Ultimately, I think that only the pilot can make the checklist process smooth and reliable. Siri to me would be one more distraction, particularly when shooting IMC approaches at busy airports. Quote
