Welcome to the forum. If you have the POH it has great guidelines and charts for all the above. Several pages with cruise, MP etc. settings for various altitudes and conditions. You have a E model so your on the right track :)

Welcome as well! There are a number of E owners on this site that are a wealth of information. I have a 66E Super 21 as well. Let me know if you have any questions specific to the plane - I'd be happy to help if I can. Tom

All the balls to the wall on take off, note EGT on leanest cylinder (likely #3), lean every few minutes to hold within 50 df of take off EGT. Pitch for 120mph for good rate and visibility, 95mph for best angle.

I just purchased my plane and am looking for some guidance for the best climb speeds and best cruise settings for the plane.

Congrats Hedge! The E  is a wonderful plane. Might I suggest you spend some time with a well versed, Mooney specific instructor who can really help you nail the speeds, teach you the nuances of the plane, make all your landings greasers, and help you get the most out of her. That stated, I lean my F to 8.6 GPH in cruise, which gives me 144 TAS at 8K. I will climb at 120 MPH, as I don't give up much over Vy yet I keep the cylinders temps considerably cooler. Feel free to PM me anytime.

A lot depends on your mission, airport, terrain, temp, TO weight. Ross already covered climb, although the book has you bring power back. If I'm out for a leisure flight I'm more conservative with power than if I am going somewhere. Cruise depends on your mission. 25/25/100ROP can give you better than 150ktas under the right conditions. If you want to fly more efficiently you can throttle back from there. You can even try LOP and get some serious range, plenty of posts and opinions about that here. The book gives you a good idea of what e different settings do for you, however the speeds are waaaaay high.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.  My plane came with logbooks, but didn't have a POH or checklists.  Does anyone have a recommendation for finding a good checklist and POH for my '66 20E super 21.

I have a checklist I can share. (I uploaded to the "files" section but it may take a few hours for it to be available.) It will be a little different because of avionics but you can modify. Our '66s came with an "Owner's Manual" rather than a POH. It should be available in electronic form, check member uploads and Google.

Thank you.  I downloaded an owner's manual.  That is a big help.  I have found some checklists but they were of different models and a lot of things didn't apply.  Thanks for uploading, just don't want to make any early mistakes that will cost me.  I have to work on GUMP as I haven't flown retractable  gear yet.

OK,  I am from Cincinnati.  Where do I find a good mooney specific instructor here?

I have 2 students in the Indy area and used to have one in Cincy until he moved. That said, one of the very best instructors is in Dayton, Karl Ludolph. Where are you based? I used to spend my weekends flying into I69 to see my sweetie, until I swept her off her feet, loaded her up in my F model and relocated her to Tarpon Springs. In fact, I met her at Lunkin.

I am based at I67 - Cincinnati West (Harrison).  I live on the west side and getting through downtown to get to lunken is a pain.  What contact information for Karl?  Dayton is pretty close.

The file has been approved and can be downloaded. As I mention in the cover note, it is PDF but created with MSPub. I will share if you'd like to modify and customize for your own use.

The E model is just the best.  As Bill Wheat said "they are SPRY". I rotate at 65-70 mph, VX in my 65 is 84 mph, when I have 1000 ft, 104 is VY, cruise climb at least 120, sometimes 130 when it is hot.

Welcome to the family

I just LOVE my 65 E.  Takeoff is balls to the wall to 1000 AGL then 25 inches, then 2500 to altitude.  At altitude I go to 2400-2450 and usually WOT since I typically fly over 8000 and WOT is only 20-22 in.

Cruise at 135kts or more on less than 9GPH.

Hedge, one thing for you to be aware of. My plane will cruise in the yellow arc with the throttle wide open at 8-10K altitudes - I assume yours will too. This is normal for this plane - at least for mine. My other numbers are similar to what has been mentioned here. Tom

OK, two problems that I have encountered.  1st - when I put my gear down (manual gear) at the numbers, I seem to unlock my seat belt and it comes off.  I don't realize this until I am on the ground (a little late if I ever have a problem landing).  It happens about half the time.  Anyway, does anyone else have the same problem, and if you do, what have you done to solve this little issue.

Also, I have all the log books for my plane, but I don't have the weight and balance for the plane.  Any suggestions?  I have the individual entry logs for most of the stuff, but a lot of times it just references putting them in the log books.

The seat belt unlatching is common. You probably will get better at moving the lever w/o catching on the latch. Or as the previous owner of my E did you might put a strip of velcro around the latch. I tried it and found it a pain but to each his own.

The W&B is something you need to find or have your A&P create from the logs. I am pretty sure it is an airworthiness issue. The last shop that made a change that affected W&B should have documented the effect and created a new W&B sheet.

Bob,

Will Mooney give me the original empty weight and balance data for this plane.  I have found the weight and balance data for a very similar plane and can maybe use that, but....

Do you not have an Approved Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM)? I believe it is required to be in the plane by FAR 91.9.The official w&B should be in it. www.flightsimaviation.com/data/FARS/part_91-9.html
